When I recently interviewed Gary Hirshberg, President and CE-Yo of Stonyfield, at the US Open tennis tournament, one of the questions that I asked him off-camera was the following: Who was the genius that came up with the idea of doing the YoBaby packaging in both English AND Spanish?

Prior to meeting with Gary and during my product research at the supermarket, the bilingual labels immediately jumped out at me.

In full-disclosure, anything Hispanic seems to have that effect on me. I speak Spanish, have spent a lot of time in South America, my favorite musician, Gustavo Cerati, is from Argentina, and the list goes on and on and on.

Despite my fascination or passion (some friends of mine would say “obsession”) for this subject, I am very aware that the U.S. Hispanic market is the fastest growing segment in our country and accounts for approximately 16% of the population.

Gary is also well-versed in these statistics and said that its other yogurts would be switching to bilingual labels as well. An exact time frame for when this will happen has not been determined, however.

While there may be other organic brands out there that list their ingredients in these two languages, I have yet to come across them. Read more »

In this organic restaurant review, I am presenting one of my all-time favorites in NYC — Sacred Chow.

Sacred Chow is an organic, vegan and kosher restaurant located in the heart of Greenwich Village, right near NYU. The restaurant is an true gem, and several years ago CitySearch named it the top vegetarian restaurant in NYC.

Despite the fact that I am not a vegan, I do love the vegan food that is served there. Chef/owner Cliff Preefer is an absolute genius, especially when it comes to tofu, and serves some of the most inventive and creative dishes I have ever come across.

In this video, I showcase three of my favorites at the restaurant: grilled western tofu, root vegetable latkes with Indonesian date butter and black olive seitan.

If you’re in Manhattan, definitely stop by Sacred Chow.

Sacred Chow is located at 227 Sullivan Street between West 3rd & Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village.

Last month, Whole Foods came out with a brand new organic product – a refrigerated almond milk under the 365 label.

The company claims that this is the industry’s first-ever private label, certified organic, refrigerated almond milk and I believe what it is saying. I cannot recall seeing another one.

Why is this product so novel?

Well, it is novel in terms of what you can get in the supermarket.

Prior to this product being available, our only option (aside from making it at home) was buying boxes of almond milk, which sit on the shelves in the dry goods aisle.

These boxes are kept at room temperature until you open them. Then, they go into the fridge. The shelf life of these boxes (before they are opened) is approximately one year.

Whole Foods is now offering a much more fresh alternative. Its almond milk is kept cool and has an expiration date of roughly two months.

The taste: Extremely good because of its sweetness and full-body texture. Read more »

Kelp – Making its Way Into My Diet

Kelp - Making its Way Into My Diet

I have always been a big fan of sea vegetables. Mostly, it has either been nori or dulse. However, organic kelp is something that I have been digging into a lot as of late.

For those who don’t know, kelp is a sea vegetable. If you’ve ever had sushi, the black edible “paper” on the outside of the roll is actually seaweed – nori.

If you are eating kelp dry and right out of the bag, like I do, then you will find it very, very tough and very, very salty. I mean ridiculously salty. Naturally salty, that is.

When using kelp in soups or stews, it will expand and become much more tender and easily-chewable. Kelp can also be roasted, boiled, sauteed or marinated.

I am adding kelp into my diet because I want to increase the amount of iodine I consume. Kelp is also rich in minerals and trace elements, including calcium, potassium and magnesium, and it offers substantial amounts of some of the B vitamins.

My preferred brand of choice of kelp is Maine Coast Sea Vegetables. Read more »

One of the organic food trends that I predicted for this year was the continued growth of coconut water.

There is a product on the market by a company called Exotic Superfoods (great name, isn’t it?) that sells certified organic young Thai coconut water.

Why is this so novel?

Well, the white young Thai coconuts that you see in the market are not organic. They are shipped from Thailand in formaldehyde in order to prevent mold from growing on the outside. Yes, formaldehyde. The same stuff they use on a corpse.

Exotic Superfoods gets around this whole mold issue by bottling the water in Thailand and shipping them frozen to the US. When you buy them here, you usually buy them frozen and have to let them defrost before drinking.

Nevertheless, non-organic coconuts are widely used in the raw food world, which generally prides itself on organic food.  Read more »

In her book Diet for a Hot Planet, Anna Lappé discusses how today’s agricultural system is impacting global warming and what we can do about it.

Food’s role in the warming of our environment does not get enough attention but hopefully Diet for a Hot Planet will help reverse that. This theme was actually one of my five organic food trends that I predicted earlier this year.

Anna Lappé discusses how the huge amount of processed food we consume and livestock we raise, along with GMOs, millions and millions of pounds of pesticides and fertilizer, soil destruction and many other factors, contribute to global warming.

Diet for a Hot Planet is incredibly well-researched and informative, and is a must-read book for anyone who cares about organics and the environment. Anna Lappé, a fellow Brown University alum, has put out a very important piece of work.

The book is available on Amazon by clicking HERE.

Organic Avenue, an organic take-out place that sells pressed juice, juice cleanses and raw vegan food, now has a presence at Fashion Week.

Needless to say, this is a very positive development. For the many people who work during Fashion Week (fashion journalists, buyers, models, etc.), their days consist of running from show to show to show to show with little to no time to eat well.

Organic Avenue has set up a pop-up juice bar in Lincoln Center, the new location of Fashion Week, so that these individuals can get some proper nutrition when they are on the run.

The limited menu includes: watermelon juice, coconut water, green juice (Green Love), cacao smoothies, gazpacho, lemon lime shakes and purified alkaline water.

Organic Avenue at Fashion Week is a phenomenal sight and a continuation of a very promising trend that I am seeing – organic restaurants expanding to non-traditional venues.

Stonyfield Cafe, an organic/natural cafe, set up shop at the US Open tennis tournament this year and organic food trucks are popping up all over the place.

If you are at Fashion Week at Lincoln Center and or are in the Upper West Side in Manhattan, stop by Organic Avenue’s juice bar.

It is located in the lobby at Alice Tully Hall, located on Broadway between 65th and 66th.
