Recently, I have been eating quite a bit at Souen, a fantastic macrobiotic and organic restaurant in NYC, and one of my favorite things to order is the Macro Plate.

The Macro Plate is rice, beans, steamed vegetables and sea vegetables with carrot-ginger dressing, but I like to substitute the rice with soba noodles. Seeing as how I have become such a fan of soba noodles as of late, I thought that I would start making them at home.

Easier Said Than Done

In my search for soba noodles at my local organic market, it was very difficult to find organic soba noodles that did not contain wheat. Most contained whole wheat and buckwheat. I wanted buckwheat soba noodles with nothing else added. Read more »

When I was in a Whole Foods in Denver recently, I came across an interesting magazine that I had never seen before called Gastronomica.

However, as soon as I saw the $12 price tag, I immediately put it down. It seemed very expensive, and I had already spent too much money on food as it was.

Once back in New York City, I saw Gastronomica again but this time I decided to splurge.

It only took a few minutes for me to realize that not only was this an absolute gem of a magazine but the $12 price was actually a bargain.

How could a $12 magazine be a bargain? Let me explain. Read more »

Brooklyn Flea, which hosts some of the most popular flea markets in the city, recently expanded its offerings. The latest offshoot is called Smorgasburg, billed as a food market that “brings together New York State Greenmarket farmers and top New York City purveyors and chefs on the spectacular Williamsburg waterfront every Saturday.”

Many of these vendors were local food artisans but what interested me, of course, were the organic booths. Needless to say, the skyline of Manhattan and the gorgeous weather made for a spectacular afternoon at Smorgasburg.

These were the organic food vendors that I saw. Read more »

As I am getting older, I find myself spending less and less time with my close friends. We are all very busy with work and family obligations, and many of us live in different cities.

Last night, it was fantastic to catch up with one of my best friends, David Lee, who was visiting NYC from San Francisco. He and I only get to see each other about once or twice a year since we live on opposite sides of the country.

We became great friends in high school (where he played like Tony Peña behind home plate), and he has gone on to become a major player in the technology world.

David Lee runs SV Angel, which is the premier angel investment fund in the country. He sees absolutely every single hot deal there is Silicon Valley and every tech entrepreneur is begging him for money. Read more »

Ever Seen One of These Before? I Hadn't Until The Other Day - An Organic Gold Nugget Mandarin

I don’t know why it has been so difficult lately but it has taken me several days to find an organic coconut oil that I wanted to buy.

Yesterday, I stumbled across Artisana’s Organic Coconut Oil and immediately picked it up.

The Requirements

There are three main things that I have to see when buying coconut oil.

1) It has to be organic This goes without saying.

2) It has to be in a glass jar As I have written about before, I carry glass water bottles to work and want to use glass, instead of plastic, as much as I can.

I often see several different brands of coconut oil in plastic containers. Regardless of how badly I want or need the coconut oil, I don’t buy it and prefer to wait in order to get something that I am happy with. Read more »
