I am now officially a massive Dr. Oz fan. Massive.

Not only did he expose high levels of arsenic in non-organic apple juice, but he is talking about very serious food safety issues that nearly all celebrity doctors avoid discussing.

In a syndicated piece that he wrote the other day with Dr. Michael Roizen, Chief Medical Officer at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute, Dr. Oz talked about four main food safety concerns that Americans should be worried about and how best to deal with them.

1) Antibiotics

Factory-farmed animals receive incredible amounts of antibiotics to help them grow faster and keep them “healthy” in the horrible living conditions in which they must survive. As a result, this practice promotes the development of antibiotic-resistant superbugs that infect about 1.4 million people each year and kill at least 63,000 in North America. Read more »

I have been doing A LOT of juicing lately, some apple/carrot but mostly it has been green juice.

When I make green juice, I always try to mix it up so I am not using the exact same green vegetables every single day.

I’ll either use celery or cucumber as my base and then put kale, collards, swiss chard or some other type of leafy green in there. I’ll also throw in sprouts, if available, but will rarely juice spinach because of its high oxalic acid content.

One green that I used today was organic dandelion. Read more »

In TIME magazine the other day, there was an article called “What’s the Healthiest Breakfast?” and they asked 7 experts for their responses.

Only 2 of the 7 respondents, comprised of nutritionists, registered dieticians and one trainer, mentioned organic.

While everyone has a varying opinion about what comprises a healthy breakfast, I believe that if a breakfast is not organic, it isn’t that healthy. Why?

When you’re eating conventionally-grown food/dairy products and you buy them at the market, you have no idea if they have been sprayed with toxic chemicals, contain genetically-modified ingredients (GMOs), or come from animals who have been fed synthetic growth hormones. Read more »

The Real Dirt on Farmer John was a movie that I had been wanting to see for quite a while, and I watched it this past weekend.

Unlike many of the other movies that I review here, such as Flow (which taught me a lot about the tremendous water issues throughout the world) or Dirt! The Movie (which give me an in-depth look at everything that encompasses soil), The Real Dirt on Farmer John had a much different impact on me.

Winner of over 30 awards at film festivals including first ever Reel Current Al Gore Award at the Nashville Film Festival and the Grand Jury Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival, The Real Dirt on Farmer John tells us the story of lifelong Illinois farmer John Peterson.
