Comeback Award from Natural Products Expo West 2014 - GoodOnYa

At Natural Products Expo West 2010, I discovered a company called GoodOnYa and really flipped out over its energy bars. Over time, however, the quality of the company’s products seemed to slip and I could not figure out why. At Natural Products Expo West 2010, I discovered a company called GoodOnYa and really flipped out over its energy bars.

Over time, however, the quality of the company’s products seemed to slip and I could not figure out why. When I caught up with GoodOnYa’s Founder/CEO Kris Fillat at this year’s show, she fully agreed with my assessment and said that for the last few years the company had suffered from some very serious issues with its co-packer (manufacturer).

Fortunately, all of these problems are in the past, and the company’s products are not only back to where they were but they are significantly better than they were four years ago. Read more »

The Best Farmers Market in the U.S. is in Miami, Florida

The Best Farmers Market in the U.S. is in Miami, Florida

Most people would probably say that choosing the best farmers market in the country would be based on selection, prices, quantity, how much is organic, crowds, and overall experience. For me, it is much more simple. Which farmers market will dictate my entire travel schedule just so I can be there for it?

The Lentil and Black Bean Pastas by Tolerant Foods are Fantastic!

Just like many other people, I love eating pasta. However, I don’t eat pasta that has gluten in it, so that generally leaves me with pasta made from quinoa, corn or rice. While I don’t have issues with any of these three, I had always wanted something a little different. That is why I totally […]

Just like many other people, I love eating pasta.

However, I don’t eat pasta that has gluten in it, so that generally leaves me with pasta made from quinoa, corn or rice.

While I don’t have issues with any of these three, I had always wanted something a little different.

That is why I totally flipped out when I came across the red lentil pasta by Tolerant Foods at Natural Products Expo West earlier this year. I was so excited about this pasta that I immediately named it to my Top 5 Organic Products of the Show.

It is rich and hearty, and the texture is strikingly similar to a wheat or flour pasta. Read more »

The Health Risks of Eating Conventional Potatoes

The Health Risks of Eating Conventional Potatoes

It was the standard American diet with all of the processed, fast food that most of the country still consumes today. Whenever I think about a lot of the food that I ate growing up, it isn’t overly pleasant. It was the standard American diet with all of the processed, fast food that most of the country still consumes today.

Fortunately, my childhood took place before the emergence of GMOs (mid-90s) and growth hormone milk (late 80s), so I escaped some of the really bad things when my body was in its crucial stage of development.

One food that I fondly remember eating, and loving, at family dinners was potatoes. And it wasn’t just the insides of the potatoes. I particularly loved eating the skins. Yet, little did I or my parents know just how toxic they were.

When many people think of the most important foods to be eating organic, potatoes do not immediately come to mind as quickly as apples, grapes, or spinach do. But they should and here’s why. Read more »

TAKE ACTION - Don't Let Proposed FDA Food Safety Rules Devastate Small Local and Organic Farmers

With the continued popularity and importance of farmers markets around the country, it would seem logical that our government would put in place policies to protect these treasured institutions and the people who supply them the food. With the continued popularity and importance of farmers markets around the country, it would seem logical that our government would put in place policies to protect these treasured institutions and the people who supply them the food.

The problem, however, is that the success of local and organic farmers markets is a serious threat to Big Agriculture. These massive companies would prefer that our entire diet consist of nutritionally-devoid, genetically-modified soy and corn instead of healthy organic produce grown by local farmers. Read more »

When you come to New York City and ask someone where to get pressed organic juice, there is an excellent chance that Juice Press will be mentioned. And for good reason.

What started out as a small, one-store operation in the East Village in 2010 has quickly exploded to 13 locations throughout NYC and the Hamptons. With many more stores to be opened over the next few years and $7M from investors such as Home Depot’s Ken Langone and billionaire hedge fund manager Stanley Druckenmiller, Founder Marcus Antebi has proven that he has what it takes to build a serious brand in the organic world.

One of the things that you’ll notice when you enter a Juice Press location is the enormous selection of both juices and food, which made choosing my five favorite picks all that more difficult. And believe me, there were plenty of items that I consume on a regular basis that did not make this list.

GROWER PETE’S ORGANIC LIVING BUTTER LETTUCE

Every time I see Pete Overgaag, President of Hollandia Produce (the parent company of Grower Pete’s), at an organic trade show, I always run over to him with great excitement. I repeatedly remind him of the time that I discovered his lettuce growing in an actual pot at my local supermarket. After a few years, my enthusiasm for his product still hasn’t waned. Read more »
