Coconut water is one of the most popular and fastest growing drinks on the market for one main reason — it tastes so good.

Furthermore, it is touted as the best post-workout drink due to its large number of electrolytes. There always seems to be someone who is drinking it immediately after my yoga classes.

Yet, nearly every box of coconut water that you see people drinking from is not organic.

My Dilemma

Even though many organic food restaurants use young Thai coconuts, these coconuts are not organic. They are shipped in formaldehyde from Thailand in order prevent mold from growing on the outside of the fruit.

Furthermore, I have heard that they plant sugar into the ground where the coconut palm trees are grown in order to get a much sweeter taste. Read more »

My Reaction to Mark Bittman's Op-Ed Piece in the NY Times

Mark Bittman, the author of several books and long-time food columnist for the NY Times, recently wrote a very good op-ed piece that is worth reading.

His Why Aren’t GMO Foods Labeled? is something that every citizen in our country should be asking our politicians. And demanding answers.

Europe requires that GMO foods be labeled because they believe in giving consumers a choice and proper information about the foods that they are putting into their bodies.

In the U.S., our politicians are extremely beholden to Big Ag and don’t want to label foods as genetically-modified because they are scared that people won’t buy them.

Given that 70% of our supermarket shelves contain GMOs, I can see why they would be concerned. There would be a massive transition to organic food and conventional food companies would suffer tremendously.

Yet, our lawmakers have concluded that GMO foods are “generally regarded as safe” and they completely ignore the way in which a food is manufactured. Read more »

Even though I do not have any children or a pregnant wife (or a wife, for that matter), I give a tremendous amount of thought as to how I would feed my kids.

And given that many of my friends are now pregnant or already have young kids, it is interesting to observe how these parents make decisions about food.

The one thing that I notice is that organic food becomes much more of a priority when children come into the picture.

For many people out there who are completely new to this area and don’t know where to begin, these are are my Top 5 Organic Food Tips for Pregnant Women and New Mothers.

1) Start Now — While You Are Pregnant This is the biggest mistake I see — women don’t start early enough.

I come across many mothers who are very enthusiastic and adamant about feeding their kids organic food. Read more »

The post that I wrote the other day about water generated a bunch of emails and Tweets, particularly about me not drinking the Poland Spring water in my office.

Since so many people buy bottled water, I thought that I would share the bottled water rankings which the Environmental Working Group recently put out. It is the most comprehensive report that I have ever seen on this subject.

It not only grades each brand of bottled water but asks the water companies the following questions:

– Where does the water come from?

– Is it purified? How?

– Have tests found any contaminants? Read more »

One question has been really bothering me as of late: Is there such a thing as USDA certified organic honey?

Despite the picture you see above, there is good reason for me to have serious doubt.  Here is why.

In the past, I have spoken to numerous local beekeepers and when I asked them if their honey is organic, they have all told me that there is no such thing as USDA certified organic honey.

Yet when I go to the market, I see one or two brands of honey that have the USDA organic seal on the label. Almost all of the honey that has the seal on it comes from Brazil, which has made me wonder whether there is some type of corruption going on with the certification. Read more »

My Water Habits and The Only Water Bottle I Use - A Glass One

As I have written about many times before, I am a water fanatic. I like clean, ultra-purified water and have a four-stage filter (with a .015 micron filter on filter #2) in my apartment.

When I go to work, there is a Poland Spring cooler but I refuse to drink from it. Why?

The water tastes very, very off and is not purified.

So, I bring my own bottles of water to work each day. This may sound crazy to some people but drinking high quality water is essential to staying healthy.

Given that I take so much effort to drink good water, the type of bottle that I use is also of great importance.

I used to drink from a BPA-free plastic bottle. The problem with that is that it is still plastic and is leaching other chemicals into the water. Read more »
