My Lunch at Earth Matters in NYC
VERY UNFORTUNATELY, EARTH MATTERS CLOSED IN OCTOBER 2012.
After spending a few days in upstate New York for my talk at Herkimer County Community College, I was hungry for some fantastic organic food and decided to head down to Earth Matters in the Lower East Side.
Earth Matters is an organic supermarket in NYC that offers excellent hot and cold prepared foods. Additionally, their raw food chef, Lawrence Goldberg (no relation), is a serious talent. Here’s what I had:
BEET AND SUNFLOWER SPROUT SALAD
KELP NOODLES WITH PESTO SAUCE
I haven’t been eating a lot of traditional pasta, or even quinoa pasta, lately but these kelp noodles really do it for me. Super-crunchy and filling. Plus, I’m a HUGE fan of pesto.
VANILLA FUDGE SWIRL
The filling is made with cashews, coconut meat, vanilla, maca, coconut oil, and coconut nectar. The crust is made with flax meal, coconut oil, coconut nectar, and vanilla. The fudge is made with cacao powder, coconut oil, and coconut nectar.
Did the vanilla fudge swirl taste as good as it looks?
No, it was a lot better than it looks. This dessert totally rocked and sent me into a state of disbelief.

If you’re ever in downtown NYC and are looking for some really good organic and/or raw food, definitely consider stopping by Earth Matters.
While not a formal organic restaurant with table service, I just love going there. The food is always really solid and the place has great energy. Also, it’s one of my favorite spots to spend a few hours with my laptop.
