Top 5 Non-Food Products from Natural Products Expo East 2012

The other day I put up my Top 5 Organic Food Products from Natural Products Expo East 2012.

However, food was not the only thing that captured my attention at the show. The personal care and cooking products were incredibly impressive and innovative.

Here are My Top 5 Non-Food Products from Expo East 2012.

VERMONT SOAP ORGANICS – TOOTH SALT

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you know that the only fruit/vegetable wash I recommend is by Vermont Soap Organics. It’s the best.

After Expo East 2012, I am coming to realize something else – that Vermont Soap Organics founder Larry Plesent is one of the leading talents in the entire organic industry. Period.

I could go on and on about his products, and I LOVED what he showed me in Baltimore – Tooth Salt.

Natural/organic dental care is going to be huge going forward because of the importance of healthy gums/teeth to overall health, so I am paying much more attention to it these days.

And according to Larry Plesent, three ingredients have stood the test of time to help fight bacteria, maintain freshness, and whiten teeth.

Not surprisingly, these three ingredients are what Vermont Soap Organics uses to make its Tooth Salt – sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), sodium chloride (table salt), and essential oils in small quantities. (The baking soda and sea salt used in this product are not contaminated with heavy metals.)

Keep up the awesome work, Larry!

SQUATTY POTTY

Out of every single trade show that I have been to over the past few years, I don’t think I have ever come across a product that could be bigger than the Squatty Potty.

If what the company is saying is correct – the only natural defecation posture for a human being is squatting and modern toilets cause abnormal posture when we go to the bathroom, which result in constipation, hemorrhoids, and colon problems – then there should be a Squatty Potty in every single bathroom in the world.

The testimonials are off the charts, and the logic to this product makes complete sense.

The Squatty Potty comes in plastic, recycled wood fiber and bamboo. Mine is being delivered as we speak.

It can be purchased online.

IF YOU CARE – BAKING BOX

Have you ever cooked fish or anything else in the oven and the food left a smell in the pan for weeks? Or, it took forever to clean and you just wanted to throw it out? Or, you needed something light and easy to travel with?

Well, this cardboard loaf box (pan) by If You Care may not look like much but you can put it in the oven up until 428 degrees! When the woman at the booth told me this, I nearly fell over.

It is marketed for baking products but in my opinion, the uses for it extend beyond bread and cakes.

The product is made from FSC-certified, unbleached, totally chlorine-free (TCF) paper and can be purchased online.

BUM BOOSA BAMBOO TOILET PAPER

Bum Boosa toilet paper is made from 100% bamboo that is processed using the mechanical pulping method, which is tree-free, biodegradable, BPA-free, and elemental chlorine-free.

And according to the founders, they are first ones in the world to develop bamboo bathroom tissue.

Research has very recently shown that toilet paper made with recycled content is a source of BPAs (bisphenols) that are leaching into the groundwater and impacting drinking water, the habitat, and soil quality. This is largely due to paper recycling practices.

Bamboo, which is a renewable, sustainable resource, does not require irrigation, pesticides, or replanting after harvest. Whitened without chemicals containing elemental chlorine, Bum Boosa’s bamboo bathroom tissue also has no added fragrances or dyes.

Smooth and soft, Bum Boosa is a real winner. It can be purchased online.

WOOLZIES DRYER BALLS

Want to get rid of fabric softener, cut drying time by 25%, save energy, and have your clothes much softer when they leave the dryer?

If so, you’ll want to take a look at the handmade wool dryer balls by Woolzies. Made in New Zealand, these dryer balls are PVC-free and also reduce static and wrinkles.

When I walked by this booth, it took me about two seconds to understand the value proposition of Woolzies. And I can’t wait to see how soft they’ll make my clothes.

Woolzies dryer balls can be purchased online.
