As we celebrate Earth Day and examine how our activities are harming the planet, we rarely, if ever, analyze how our language might be impacting our ability to improve the world.
Case in point is the word “sustainable” – a term widely used, and misunderstood, in environmental circles.
Last week, the Fancy Food Show 2014 recently took place here in NYC and as usual, I had a fantastic time.
I can’t think of a more fun day than to see all of the new products, meet new people, and catch up with friends in the industry.
Even though I heard a lot of grumbling that there was nothing new at this show, I couldn’t disagree more. You just have to be insanely curious and willing to go to every single booth to find the gems.
Here are my Top 5 Organic Products from Fancy Food Show 2014.
LOTUS FOODS – FORBIDDEN RICE RAMEN
Lotus Foods has been on my radar screen for a while now, and I absolutely love what the company is doing, especially with its work in sustainability.
Recently, I caught up with my good friend Daniel Sullivan, the founder of newly re-branded Temple Turmeric, and we touched on a wide variety of subjects — why his company decided to change its name, what this new name signifies, the power of turmeric, and why his turmeric drink is the best one on the market.
Despite the fact that it has become a burgeoning trend in the beverage world, cold-brew coffee is still a relatively unknown quantity to the average person on the street.
In a very unscientific poll that I conducted, the majority of people that I talked to had heard of cold-brew coffee but couldn’t give me a good answer as to what it is and why people should be drinking it. And to be perfectly honest, I was pretty in the dark about cold-brew as well.
While I know that choosing organic coffee is a must, because coffee is one of the most chemically-treated crops in the world, I, too, had many questions about this increasingly popular drink.
In yet another study, we have more evidence that organic is a healthier choice.
A report out of the University of Barcelona claims that organic tomatoes have a higher amount of antioxidants than conventional tomatoes.
Researchers used liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry to determine that organic tomatoes have a greater amount of phenolic compounds or polyphenols. Polyphenols, which are natural antioxidants of plant origin, are associated with the prevention of cardiovascular and degenerative diseases, and some forms of cancer.

Last week in New York City, I attended the Fancy Food Show 2016, one of the best food shows of the year.
While it is not an organic food show per se, there is an increasing amount of organic vendors and I would estimate that about 15-20% of the booths there do offer some type of organic product.
If you’ve seen my favorite movie ever – What The Bleep Do We Know? – then you are no doubt familiar with the work of Dr. Masaru Emoto.
Dr. Emoto did studies that showed the crystal formations of water molecules actually change when positive messages are put on the outside of glasses of water. Hence, positive messages have a real impact, on both an emotional and physical level.
