Another Reason to Eat Organic – GMOs and Weedkiller Found in Conventional Cereal

If anyone you know is still feeding their children conventional cereal, maybe this piece of news will get them to change their habits.

GMO Free USA, a non-profit that educates consumers and other stakeholders about the potential hazards of GMOs, just published its results of independent lab tests (verified by DNA analysis) done on Kellogg’s Froot Loops cereal.

Here’s what they found:

1) 100% of the corn in the Froot Loops was genetically-modified, containing DNA sequences known to be present in insecticide-producing Bt and Roundup Ready corn. This corn produces insecticides inside of the plant’s cells and cannot be washed off. Read more »

During the Vietnam War, the U.S. used an incredibly lethal chemical called Agent Orange as part of its herbicidal warfare program.

It is estimated that 400,000 people were killed or maimed, and 500,000 children were born with birth defects as a result of spraying Agent Orange all over Vietnam. Read more »

We have gotten several good pieces of news over the past few weeks. Most notably, GMO-labeling is now officially on the ballot in Colorado, and the vote will take place in November.    

The USDA announced that it is cracking down on misleading organic marketers, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said that it will be phasing out genetically-engineered crops and will ban bee-killing pesticides on national refuges.

Huge kudos goes to celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who has publicly come out against the dangerous Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement. If you’ve never heard of TTIP, see my recent post about it. Very scary stuff. Read more »

Recently, I got a comment from a woman who felt guilty about feeding her kids pesticide-laden, conventionally-grown food and asked if she “should always feed them organic.”

If you’re a frequent reader of my blog, you know that aside from writing about organic products, restaurants, and trends, I dedicate a good amount of time to what is happening politically in regards to the organic industry.

The reason I do this is the because genetically-modified foods (GMOs) are an extremely serious threat to both the long-term viability of organic and the health of our fellow citizens.

Furthermore, it is a topic that does not receive accurate or adequate coverage in mainstream media.

The unfortunate reality is this.

A very high percentage of the U.S. population does not know what GMOs are and does not understand the very grave health risks that GMOs pose. Even worse, they don’t realize how our government is not protecting our health nor upholding our rights as American citizens.
