At the beginning of this year, I was very close to naming glyphosate as one of my Top 5 Organic Food Trends for 2016 but decided against it.

While glyphosate, the primary ingredient in Monsanto’s RoundUp and named by the World Health Organization as a “probable human carcinogen”, impacts the organic food world tremendously, it isn’t organic per se. Nevertheless, I knew it would be in the news a ton in this year, and it certainly has been lately. Why This Should Terrify Everyone – Nearly 100% of Germans are Contaminated with the Super-Toxic Glyphosate

Crop Dusting

While GMOs and the lack of mandatory GMO-labeling in the U.S. seem to be getting everyone’s attention these days, a bigger and more dangerous story may very well be the toxic chemicals that are sprayed on our crops.

The most widely used chemical of them all, glyphosate, which just happens to be the primary ingredient in Monsanto’s RoundUp, has been generating its own fair share of news lately.

And this news is very troubling, to say the least.   Read more »

TAKE ACTION: Tell California to Label Glyphosate as a Cancer-Causing Chemical

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO COMMENT – PLEASE TAKE ACTION IMMEDIATELY.

Recently, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Review of Cancer declared that glyphosate – the primary ingredient in Monsanto’s bestselling weedkiller Roundup – was a “probable carcinogen” and linked to cancer in humans.

Each year more than 280 million pounds of glyphosate are sprayed on farmers’ fields across the country, and the U.S. Geological Survey has found glyphosate in more than 75% of air, rain and stream samples taken across the Midwest.

In addition to being linked to cancer, numerous studies have connected glyphosate with liver and kidney disease, and being responsible for wiping out more than 90% of the monarch butterfly population. Read more »

The FDA/USDA/EPA launch a GMO Website, But the Bigger Plan is Much More Worrisome

If consumers are seeking fair and balanced information about GMOs, they certainly will not find it on the new FDA/USDA/EPA website called Feed Your Mind.

This site is part of the Agricultural Biotechnology Education and Outreach Initiative, which was funded by Congress, and is intended “to share science-based information that educates, informs and broadens understanding about agricultural biotechnology for consumers.”

Not surprisingly, it presents a very one-sided view of GMOs. Read more »

Farmer Direct Organic is Raising the Bar When it Comes to Fair Wages for Growers and Traceability for Consumers

With more than 80% of U.S. consumers purchasing organic food on a regular basis, the industry continues to surge in popularity, and there are more organic brands – and choices – than ever.

Yet, when one takes a deeper look at what is happening behind the scenes, the picture is rather unsettling. Most notably, the farmers are suffering beyond imagination.

According to the USDA, projected 2019 median farm income was expected to be -$1,636, and a majority of farmers are forced to earn off-farm income to feed their families and keep their farms afloat.

Canada-based Farmer Direct Organic, a certified organic producer of grains, seeds and legumes, is acutely aware of this problem and is making it a cornerstone of the company’s operating philosophy. Read more »

The Calculated Strategy to Take Down Journalist Carey Gillam Can be Seen as a Step to Dismantle Organic

For anyone who cares about the integrity of organic and the future of our industry, what has transpired with Carey Gillam should be of incredible concern.

Recently released court documents revealed that Gillam, a journalist and author of Whitewash: The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer, and the Corruption of Science, was the target of a carefully-crafted campaign by Monsanto to discredit her. Read more »

Another Reason to Eat Organic — Organic Apples Contain More Diverse, Healthier Bacteria than Conventional

An apple a day will keep the doctor away.

Thanks to a new study, that saying has taken on even more meaning, particularly for organic apples.

In a recently published paper in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology, it was found that organic apples contain a more diverse population of beneficial bacteria than conventional apples.

Researchers analyzed the peel, flesh, seeds, and stem of both organically and conventionally grown apples, looking to find how much and what kinds of bacteria were present. While organic and conventional apples contained the same amount of bacteria, there was a big discrepancy in the types of bacteria found. Read more »
