Even though my website has been up for only a very short period of time, several people have left comments on the blog that they like to look their local farmer in the eye before they purchase their food.

Why is this?  Well, they want some reassurance that the food they are buying is truly organic and free of pesticides.

In essence, they want to know where their food is coming from.

Dole Organic has recognized this desire of many consumers and has actually done something about it.

At the top of the label, you will see a farm number.  If you go to doleorganic.com and search for the corresponding number, in this case #633, you will be able to get information about and pictures of the farm where the bananas were produced, including PDFs of the organic certification papers.  The content and pictures may vary slightly from farm to farm.

According to Frans Wielemaker, Director of Sourcing and Development of the Organic and Exotics Program at Dole, “this program was started two years ago.  It was initially something that our organic certifier wanted us to have but once all the hard work and logistics were implemented, we decided to use the system as a way to connect with the consumer.” Read more »

I just knew that the hundreds and hundreds of hours I have spent roaming the aisles of supermarkets and studying menus at organic restaurants would come in handy one day.

But, I had no idea that it would lead to me writing this post.  So, here it goes….

1) More and More Coconuts

Coconuts have taken on much more prominence as of late.  A bunch of ice creams, including Luna and Larry’s Organic Coconut Bliss and Purely Decadent, have coconuts as their central ingredient.  Energy bars, such as those from Raw Revolution, have used them in their products for a while.

In terms of organic coconuts, this is what I foresee.

Organic coconut water: Coconut water is a hot trend in the beverage world right now.  Some people consider coconut water to be the ultimate post-workout drink because it contains electrolytes.

However, nearly all of those boxes of coconut water that are flying off the shelves in the supermarkets are not organic.  It is only a matter of time before we see a shift to organic. Read more »

Cancer Expert Says Hormonal Milk is Not Safe; Organic Milk is the Clear Choice

This is largely because milk serves as an important source of nutrition for kids.  It, therefore, begs the question “what exactly is my child drinking?”

Not all milk is created equal

Hormonal milk contains a genetically engineered hormone called Recombinant Bovine Somatotropin (rBST), which is produced by companies such as Monsanto and Elanco.

rBST is injected into approximately 20% of all U.S. dairy cows in order to increase milk production, and industry studies by consultants report that this hormone is safe for both the cows and consumers.

Yet, Dr. Samuel Epstein, Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition and an international leading authority on the causes and prevention of cancer, says these studies were not only paid for by Monsanto and others but that that these claims are “blatantly false.”

Dr. Epstein, an author of several books including “What’s In Your Milk”, warns that:

– rBST makes cows sick. Monsanto has been forced to admit to about 20 toxic effects, including mastitis, on the label of Posilac, the rBST product that when administered to cows makes them produce more milk.  Monsanto’s Posilac product was acquired by Eli Lilly in 2008. Read more »

French Government Agrees: Organic Food is More Nutritious

I believe it is intellectually dishonest to say that organic food and non-organic food have the same nutritional value. Soil quality directly impacts nutritional levels, and I find it impossible to believe that soil, which has been ravaged by toxic chemicals and mono-cropping, cannot suffer any nutritional consequences as a result.

The French government has come to a similar conclusion, albeit from a more empirical perspective.

A recent report by the French Agency for Food Safety (AFSSA) has found that organic foods are better for you and contain fewer pesticides and nitrates, which have been linked to a range of health problems including diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Read more »

What is this list?  It is a list of the most chemically-treated fruits and vegetables.

EWG research “has found that the people who eat the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables consume an average of 10 pesticides a day.  Those who eat the 15 least contaminated conventionally-grown fruits and vegetables ingest fewer than 2 pesticides daily.”

In case you are shopping and can’t remember what is on the list, the basic rule of thumb is this: buy organic fruits or vegetables that have nothing to be peeled off before eating. Read more »

cup of coffeeA girl I used to know in New York City was so fanatical about recycling that she would literally take empty bottles home from bars because she feared that they would be tossed in the garbage.

I’ll never forget the time when we were out one night and she started filling up her designer handbag with empty beer bottles, which weren’t even hers!  She was that committed to the environment.

Yet, when she drank her coffee each morning, organic coffee was never even a consideration.

Although I didn’t realize it at the time, this didn’t make much sense.  Why?

Because conventionally-grown coffee is incredibly unhealthy for people and the planet. Read more »

The taste is rich, smooth, and, yes, pretty awesome. It also contains nutrients that are important for babies’ development.

The other thing that I love about this product is that the nutritional information/label is in both English and Spanish.

With the U.S. Hispanic population growing at a very, very fast rate, it is fantastic to see an organic brand recognize this and make important health information bi-lingual.
