The Center for Food Safety, a fantastic non-profit organization that is a huge defender of organic food in this country, just released a really cool and useful iPhone App. It is called The True Food Shopping Guide.

This will be of tremendous use to people in helping them become more educated about which foods/brands contain genetically-modified foods and which ones don’t.

In this video review, I go over several key aspects of the app. Needless to say, I think it is phenomenal.

It can be downloaded for free on iTunes. If you don’t have an iPhone or Android, a free printed version can be found here.

When I went to Natural Products Expo West earlier this year, I was able to spend three full days there and take my time visiting each booth. I felt good about writing my Best of Show Awards since I was confident that I had seen everything.

At this year’s Fancy Food Show at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC, my time was limited to three hours on one day. I did my best to see everything I could but there is no doubt that I missed some things.

A few key takeaways:

– I was stunned by all of the foreign food companies at the show. It seemed that every country from every continent had its own section.

– Organic food did not have its own designated area. I was curious if it would but was informed that with so many companies doing organic, it no longer made logistical sense.

– The energy was very different than at Expo West. This could be a result of Expo West being a smaller show and a unifying passion around organic/natural.

Now, for the most interesting and compelling products that I saw.

RUNA AMAZON GUAYUSA TEA

There seem to be hundreds of organic teas on the market and the first question that pops out of my mouth when I see a new one is “what makes this tea different from all of the other teas?”

There are three things that make Runa Tea unique. Read more »

Supreme Court Votes in Favor of Organic, Against Monsanto

About a month ago, I wrote a post about a very important Supreme Court case regarding genetically-engineered alfalfa.

Last week, a verdict came out and it was a huge victory for organic food proponents.

Yet, if you read the mainstream press, Monsanto did an amazing spin job and made it seem as if they had won the case. The New York Times certainly portrayed it in this light.

However, one organization that I trust wholeheartedly, The Center for Food Safety (CFS), saw the decision very differently. The legal issues are quite complex and the best way to get a good understanding of the verdict is to read what the CFS had to say.

Here is the third video with my friend Jennifer and this week’s organic food topic is raw food.

If you haven’t heard of raw food or have never been to a raw food restaurant, take note. The raw food movement is really taking off to cities all across the country. In this video I explain what raw food is and give my take on whether people should be eating a 100% raw food diet.

In the segment, I mention Dr. Gabriel Cousens and his Tree of Life retreat center. His book Conscious Eating can be found HERE.

The USDA Cracks Down on Organic Food from China

Dangerous products from China seem to be the norm these days. Dangerous products from China seem to be the norm these days.

U.S. consumers have had to deal with the toxic drywall disaster.  Then, we found out that Chinese-manufactured toys and trinkets contained cadmium instead of lead.  Cadmium is a known carcinogenic.

Oh, and how about the milk that killed several babies and sickened thousands because of the toxic powder that was used.

With doubts swirling that the organic food from China wasn’t really organic, the USDA has banned a major certifier, the Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA), from operating there.

The reason: OCIA hired employees of a state-owned agency to inspect state-controlled farms and processing facilities. There was absolutely no independence and a serious conflict of interest at hand.

A video had been circulating on Internet recently about how Whole Foods was using “organic” food from China yet the certifying agency, Quality Assurance International, who was hired by Whole Foods and whose certification seal was on the package, claims it never did any inspections in that country. This created a mini-scandal that Whole Foods refused to comment on. Read more »

One of the things that people often ask me about is what do I do about eating organic when I travel.

For those of us who are very conscious of what we put into our bodies, we don’t want to change how we eat simply because we get on a plane or go to a different city.

In this second video with my friend Jennifer, we talk about this very subject and I share how I continue to eat my treasured organic food whenever I go on the road.

If you are like me, a lover of young Thai coconuts, then you are probably having some withdrawal as of late. Due to the political unrest in Thailand, getting coconuts has been next to impossible.

Every juice bar, supermarket or store I go to in New York City tells me the same thing: they can’t get any and don’t know when they’ll be back on the shelves.

The only thing that I have seen is a brand of water called Exotic Superfoods Organic Young Thai Coconut Water. It is shipped frozen in a plastic bottle and gets defrosted once in the U.S.

In Manhattan, both Integral Market on 13th Street and One Lucky Duck in Gramercy have been carrying this product over the last few days. For how much longer they’ll have supply is anyone’s guess.

Young Thai coconuts have been a staple in my diet for many years.  I love cracking one open and drinking the water. It is supposedly the best post-workout drink available because of its electrolytes. The coconuts are also great for breakfast smoothies (coconut milk) and raw ice cream (coconut meat).

Despite the fact that New Yorkers love Young Thai coconuts and we miss having them, I hope things get squared away in Thailand soon. Lives have been lost and that matters a lot more to me than not having one of my favorite fruits.
