Only several weeks ago, the Supreme Court ruled against Monsanto in a very important case against genetically-engineered alfalfa.

On Friday, the organic movement secured another victory when a federal court ruled against the USDA in a case involving genetically-engineered sugar beets.

Despite the fact that GMO food wreaks havoc on the environment, the USDA has had no qualms about giving Monsanto approval to sell its Roundup Ready sugar beet seeds prior to an environmental study ever being completed.

When farmers buy Roundup Ready sugar beet seeds, they also must buy the Roundup Ready herbicide, the toxic chemical sprayed on the crops. Other Roundup Ready crops have led to increased use of herbicides, a  proliferation of herbicide resistant weeds, and contamination of conventional and organic crops. Furthermore, the chemicals pollute the local water supply and destroy the soil.

The USDA’s behavior is totally reckless. Yet, it continues to cater to the needs of major agribusiness in this country and disregard what is best for the citizens it is supposed to protect. Read more »

In this video, I review Luna and Larry’s Organic Coconut Bliss. It is a vegan ice cream that I discovered at the 2009 Natural Products Expo East and have been eating it ever since.

At the end of the clip, I show a clip from an interview I did last year with one of the founders of the company, Luna Marcus.

While the company has several different flavors, Dark Chocolate is my favorite. It requires a lot of will power for me not to devour the whole container in just one sitting.

All I can say is that Luna and Larry put out a fantastic, fantastic product. What’s your favorite flavor?

Just as I profiled Steaz several months ago with their initiative to empower women, Honest Tea has launched something similar. However, Honest Tea is doing this with a brand new and innovative product.

The company recently introduced Passion Fruit Green Tea with Maqui Berry. There are a few unique attributes to this drink.

– Most importantly, Honest Tea has partnered with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and will be donating $100,000 in 2010 to this great non-profit. The limited-edition bottles have Komen for the Cure pink ribbons and caps.

Interestingly, the drink’s central component is green tea.  Green tea contains powerful antioxidants, which help fight cancer.

– This is the first bottled tea that is made with organic stevia.

– Maqui berry is also included.  I have never had maqui berry but it is a South American super-food that has been reported to have higher levels of antioxidants than the acai berry.

The tea is now available in New York City and in the Mid-Atlantic region. Honest Tea will be rolling it out over the next few months and nationwide distribution will be in place by January.

Fantastic idea for a great cause!

——

I also love the fact that Honest Tea is blazing a new trail with the maqui berry.

While I don’t know every drink on the market, I have never heard of tea that has this super-food. It will be interesting to see if this berry steals some thunder from the very popular acai.

I get asked all of the time by people “how do I know that the food that I am eating is organic?”

Well, when we buy food in the supermarket, there is an organic certification process managed by the USDA. Those organic food products have the organic seal.

Yet, what do we do when we go to restaurants?

While there are a very few restaurants that have actually been certified organic (there is one here in NYC called Gustorganics), most of them are not.

In this video, I share with you the one question that I always ask when I go to a new organic restaurant. The answer gives me a good idea about how serious they are about organic.

Organic Raw Cacao – Sunfood

Organic Raw Cacao - Sunfood

For the last few years, I have been using organic raw cacao as a key ingredient in my breakfast smoothies. While some people may use cacao nibs, my preference is to go with the organic raw cacao powder. For me, that works the best. My organic raw cacao of choice is made by Sunfood. This […]

For the last few years, I have been using organic raw cacao as a key ingredient in my breakfast smoothies. While some people may use cacao nibs, my preference is to go with the organic raw cacao powder. For me, that works the best.

My organic raw cacao of choice is made by Sunfood. This is a great company based in California and their organic raw cacao product is sourced from Ecuador.

There is a lot of debate over which country makes the best organic raw cacao. However, Swiss chocolate, considered the finest in the world, uses cacao from Ecuador.

What I like about Sunfood’s organic raw cacao is its taste and texture. It is smooth, sweet, well-balanced and very nutritious – lots of antioxidants and amino-acids.

At the 2010 Expo West trade show, the company management showed me a video of how they make their organic raw cacao. So, not only did I get to meet the people from Ecuador who export this organic raw cacao product but I got to see the actual manufacturing process.

If you are looking for a fantastic organic raw cacao product, I suggest buying Sunfood’s. You can buy it HERE.

Specialty Farms, the Connecticut-based grower of numerous sprout products, has issued a recall of some of its organic sprouts.

The reason: they are contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes – an infectious organism that can cause high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, even in healthy people. Individuals who have comprised immune systems, pregnant women, the very young and the very old are the most susceptible.

The recall includes:

– Specialty Farms 4-ounce Organic Alfalfa Sprouts Blend

– Specialty Farms 4-ounce Organic Sprout Salad

– Nature’s Promise 4-ounce Organic Alfalfa Sprouts

– Nature’s Promise 8-ounce Organic Alfalfa Sprouts

– Nature’s Promise 4-ounce Organic Zesty Sprouts

The products were sold in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Rhode Island with sell-by dates of 8/3/2010.  Other recalled products had earlier sell-by dates of 7/26/2010 and 8/1/2010.

When I was living in Boston, I used to eat several of their other sprout products on a weekly basis. Since I moved to New York City, however, I haven’t had them once. I guess I was lucky.

For more information about the recall, please check the announcement on the FDAs website.  A full list of Specialty Farms’ products can be found here.

As I wrote about in a recent blog post, Ayala’s Herbal Water was one of my favorite products that I saw at the 2010 Fancy Food Show at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City.

In this video, I interview the founder of the company, Dr. Ayala, and she talks about how she came up with the product and why.

Ayala’s Herbal Water is leading a trend that I believe will only continue to grow — organic beverages made with unique, not-too-often used herbs and spices. I am currently seeing it in NYC (a video-blog post on this is forthcoming) and we see it here with Ayala’s Herbal Water.

Keep an eye on this company.
