My New Favorite Organic Snack?

I was never a peanut butter and jelly kid growing up. In fact, it really turned me off.

So, it is kind of ironic that decades later, a much healthier version of the traditional PB&J is now one of my favorite snacks.

First of all, everything is organic.

Second, the ingredients are somewhat hard-to-find and not exactly household names.

The Bread: As I wrote about several weeks ago, I am big fan of Rudolph’s organic bread.

This rye loaf is unusual because it is wheat-free, yeast-free, salt-free and preservative-free. What keeps it all together are the sourdough cultures.

The Nut Butter: Instead of peanut butter, I am using Artisana’s walnut butter, one of my favorite brands of nut butter.

This walnut butter is raw (no roasting or heating – the enzymes remain intact), has no salt and contains raw cashew butter. It is hearty and filling, and the cashews give the nut butter great balance.

Nutritionally, walnuts are a great source of Omega-3s.

The Jelly: I am using a bilberry fruit spread by bionaturae. Just one taste of this fruit spread and you know that you are eating a seriously high-quality product.

No sugar is added in these fruit spreads, and the fruits are heirloom (no hybridization) and are grown on small, hillside family farms in Italy.

Should I be surprised that bionaturae is so good and that I love it so much?

Not at all. Ever since I started writing livingmaxwell almost two years ago, the organic products from Italy consistently stand out from all of the others. Why is this?

My guess is that it has everything to do with the soil quality there. The soil is much richer in nutrients and minerals, and has not been destroyed by all of the pesticides that we spray here.

As a result, their products just taste better. Period.

I love Dream Foods’ Italian Volcano Orange Juice.

I love Middle Earth’s Tomato Sauce.

And now let’s add bionaturae’s fruit spreads to the list.

The organic products from Italy are just the best.

So, this is one thing that I have been eating lately. What’s your favorite organic snack?
