Organic Coconut Oil Helps During a Post-Workout Recovery

When I was online this weekend, I came across a very interesting article by livestrong.com and wanted to share it with everyone.

The post talks about bodybuilding and coconut oil. While many of us may not be not bodybuilding per se, we are exercising and we are trying to build, tone or develop muscles.

Livestrong discusses two important points of how coconut oil can help us in a post-workout recovery.

1) INSULIN SECRETION

After we work out, coconut oil helps secrete insulin, which pumps nutrients into the muscles. It has been reported that coconut oil is highly insulinotropic. Furthermore, coconut oil is easily digestible and does not interfere with the absorption of other nutrients.

2) HELPS BOOST IMMUNE SYSTEM

When we work out, we put a tremendous amount of stress on our body. And when our bodies are under stress, our immune system becomes weaker, even if temporarily so.

Just think about the stress of lifting heavy weights, running or other aerobic activity. The impact on our bodies is much, much greater than walking.

So, how does the coconut oil help us?

The lauric acid in coconut oil is reported to have antiviral and antibacterial properties. Therefore, having the coconut oil after exercising will help us fight against illness (bacteria, etc.) when our bodies’ immune systems are not at their peak levels.

The livestrong article also mentions how coconut oil can enhance performance when exercising.

The three main things that I look for when buying coconut oil. They are:

1) Organic – This goes without saying. I don’t want synthetic pesticides in my coconut oil.

2) Glass Bottles – I like to use as little plastic and as much glass as I can. This certainly applies to my organic coconut oil.

I use Takeya glass water bottles when carrying around my water, and recently shot a video with David Wolfe, the most famous person in the raw food world, where we discussed the importance of glass bottles and why plastic bottles are harmful to our health.

3) Raw – I am not a raw foodist, and I do eat plenty of cooked food. However, if there is a product that I can get raw or cooked (heated), I will buy the raw one. Why?

Raw food does not get heated above 118 degrees and retains all of the minerals and nutrients.
