There were several highlights from last year’s 2011 Natural Products Expo East trade show in Baltimore.

One of them was staying at the amazing Inn at the Black Olive hotel, the most green hotel that I have ever visited.

Another was speaking on one of the panels at the show titled “Allergies, Additives and Special Diets” – the first trade show panel that I was asked to be on.

And another one was a memory I have of driving back home to New York City from Baltimore. I was absolutely famished and reached into my bag looking for a food sample that I had received at the show.

I pulled out a Kur Delight, ripped open the wrapper, and bit into it. To this day, I vividly remember saying to myself “Wow, this is amazing.” I could not believe it how great it tasted. Read more »

Cell-nique's Root Beer Drink is Extremely Impressive

I cannot tell a lie. I have a real soft spot for root beer. It brings back memories of when I was a kid (decades before my organic days) and would have root beer floats in the summer. The taste just really does it for me. Except for the occasional glass of Sipp’s ginger blossom, […]

I cannot tell a lie. I have a real soft spot for root beer.

It brings back memories of when I was a kid (decades before my organic days) and would have root beer floats in the summer. The taste just really does it for me.

Except for the occasional glass of Sipp’s ginger blossom, which is nearly impossible to resist, I don’t drink any soda.

So when I tasted Cell-nique’s root beer flavor at Expo West recently, I kind of flipped out.

Cell-nique is not a carbonated soda but a juice made of many of the world’s best superfoods. And that is what makes this beverage so impressive.

These non-food products at the 2012 Natural Products Expo West Trade Show really stood out to me, and I look forward to giving them all a try.

DALE AUDREY AYURVEDIC ORAL PULLING RINSE

I am well aware of neem oil as a dental solution in Ayurveda but had never heard of an oil pulling mouth rinse before.

According to Dale Audrey, a long-time dental hygienist, Ayurvedic practitioners believe that oil pulling not only cleanses the mouth but also pulls toxins from the body.

The product is alcohol-free, gluten-free and vegan. Its ingredients include organic sesame oil, organic safflower oil, organic flavors, organic clove bud oil, tocopheryl acetate (Vitamin E), citric acid, organic pomegranate extract, organic olive oil, organic neem and organic myrrh.

I just returned from the the 2012 Natural Products Expo West trade show in Anaheim, California and saw some fantastic organic products.

These five, however, really captured my attention.

BIG TREE FARMS MORINGA POWDER

There is no other company that brings a greater number of healthy, sustainable, and innovative products to the market than Big Tree Farms.

Each year that I go to Expo West, I just shake my head in disbelief when company founders Ben Ripple and Frederick Schilling, two verifiable rock stars, show me their latest offerings. Not only do these guys set trends in the industry, but they are obsessive about employing manufacturing techniques that maximize nutrition levels.

While I could fill this entire post with Big Tree Farms products, the one that I left most excited about was their Tru Ra line of organic moringa, a green superfood that is almost beyond comparison – more Vitamin A than carrots, more calcium than milk, more iron than spinach, more Vitamin C than oranges, and more potassium than bananas. This tends to happen when you are in a super-hot category and you are the best tasting, healthiest product in that category.

Harmless Harvest’s raw organic coconut water is made by using a technology called high pressure pasteurization (HPP), which I named one of my top 5 organic food trends for 2012. Read more »

I see these five products, issues and technologies making some real noise in the organic food industry this year.

AFRICAN SUPERFOODS

In the U.S., we are very familiar and comfortable with superfoods from Latin America, such as maca, chia seeds, and acai.

Yet, Africa has its own group of superfoods as well, and they are only going to grow in popularity.

These extremely nutritious, protein-rich and antioxidant-heavy foods, such as moringa (above) and baobab, will become much more ubiquitous and prominent in 2012.

I have read that moringa has 10x the Vitamin A of carrots, 17x the calcium of milk, 15x the potassium of bananas, 25x the iron of spinach, and 4x the chlorophyll of wheatgrass. Read more »

Recently, I received a copy of Martin Lindstrom’s Brandwashed: Tricks Companies Use to Manipulate Our Minds and Persuade Us to Buy.

The reason that I wanted to read it was because Whole Foods was discussed in the book and I was curious to know what he had to say about the company.

As Martin Lindstrom correctly points out, Whole Foods is very strategic in how it merchandises its products. A few examples that he mentioned were:

– Putting flowers by the entrance. These are called “symbolics”,  and they evoke freshness and “prime” us as we begin our shopping.

– All of the signs in the produce and fruit section are written on black slate with chalk, a tradition of European marketplaces. Apparently, marketers refers to this tactic as “farmgate”, so that consumers think a farmer just drove up and dropped off the vegetables. Read more »
