For those not super-entrenched in the organic world, Maria Rodale may not be a household name.  However, Maria Rodale is part of the Rodale family, which is as close to royalty as it gets when it comes to organic food in the U.S.

In 1947, Maria Rodale’s grandfather, J.I. Rodale, came to understand the connection between soil quality and health, and founded the Soil and Health Foundation, forerunner to the Rodale Institute.

More famously, he also founded Organic Farming and Gardening (now known as Organic Gardening), which was the first organic magazine of its kind. This venture led to many other books, magazines and served as the foundation for the Rodale publishing empire.

Now led by Maria Rodale, the company is the leading multimedia company with a focus on health, wellness, and the environment, and the largest independent book publisher in the U.S.

Rodale reaches 70 million people through its various media properties.

Aside from her job as chairman and CEO of Rodale, Maria Rodale has her own blog called Maria’s Farm Country Kitchen.

In her blog, Maria Rodale asks me seven questions that cover various organic and non-organic issues. If you want to know why living organic is important to me, who my favorite musician is and what is the one kitchen appliance I can’t do without, please go check out the interview.

In this video, I review Luna and Larry’s Organic Coconut Bliss. It is a vegan ice cream that I discovered at the 2009 Natural Products Expo East and have been eating it ever since.

At the end of the clip, I show a clip from an interview I did last year with one of the founders of the company, Luna Marcus.

While the company has several different flavors, Dark Chocolate is my favorite. It requires a lot of will power for me not to devour the whole container in just one sitting.

All I can say is that Luna and Larry put out a fantastic, fantastic product. What’s your favorite flavor?

Just as I profiled Steaz several months ago with their initiative to empower women, Honest Tea has launched something similar. However, Honest Tea is doing this with a brand new and innovative product.

The company recently introduced Passion Fruit Green Tea with Maqui Berry. There are a few unique attributes to this drink.

– Most importantly, Honest Tea has partnered with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and will be donating $100,000 in 2010 to this great non-profit. The limited-edition bottles have Komen for the Cure pink ribbons and caps.

Interestingly, the drink’s central component is green tea.  Green tea contains powerful antioxidants, which help fight cancer.

– This is the first bottled tea that is made with organic stevia.

– Maqui berry is also included.  I have never had maqui berry but it is a South American super-food that has been reported to have higher levels of antioxidants than the acai berry.

The tea is now available in New York City and in the Mid-Atlantic region. Honest Tea will be rolling it out over the next few months and nationwide distribution will be in place by January.

Fantastic idea for a great cause!

——

I also love the fact that Honest Tea is blazing a new trail with the maqui berry.

While I don’t know every drink on the market, I have never heard of tea that has this super-food. It will be interesting to see if this berry steals some thunder from the very popular acai.

Organic Raw Cacao – Sunfood

Organic Raw Cacao - Sunfood

For the last few years, I have been using organic raw cacao as a key ingredient in my breakfast smoothies. While some people may use cacao nibs, my preference is to go with the organic raw cacao powder. For me, that works the best. My organic raw cacao of choice is made by Sunfood. This […]

For the last few years, I have been using organic raw cacao as a key ingredient in my breakfast smoothies. While some people may use cacao nibs, my preference is to go with the organic raw cacao powder. For me, that works the best.

My organic raw cacao of choice is made by Sunfood. This is a great company based in California and their organic raw cacao product is sourced from Ecuador.

There is a lot of debate over which country makes the best organic raw cacao. However, Swiss chocolate, considered the finest in the world, uses cacao from Ecuador.

What I like about Sunfood’s organic raw cacao is its taste and texture. It is smooth, sweet, well-balanced and very nutritious – lots of antioxidants and amino-acids.

At the 2010 Expo West trade show, the company management showed me a video of how they make their organic raw cacao. So, not only did I get to meet the people from Ecuador who export this organic raw cacao product but I got to see the actual manufacturing process.

If you are looking for a fantastic organic raw cacao product, I suggest buying Sunfood’s. You can buy it HERE.

If you are not entrenched in the raw food world, there is a pretty good chance that organic raw cacao may be something new to you.

Well, actually, let me rephrase that.  Organic raw cacao may be a new super-food to you.

Organic raw cacao is derived from cacao trees, which are generally grown in countries near the equator (Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Indonesia to name a few). They can be purchased either as beans, nibs or in powder form.

Just as the name states, organic raw cacao is raw. This means the organic raw cacao is not heated above 118 degrees. That is generally considered the highest temperature that food can be heated before it loses valuable enzymes, minerals and nutrients.

Organic raw cacao is believed to be an incredibly healthy food for many reasons. Not only does it contains very high levels of magnesium, which supports a healthy heart, but organic raw cacao is full of anti-oxidants and amin-acids, such as arginine and tryptophan.

My preferred organic raw cacao brand is from Sunfood. Here is what I have to say about Sunfood’s organic raw cacao powder.

In the world of high antioxidant fruit juice, pomegranate, acai, grape and blueberry seem to get all of the attention.  Black currants, however, need to be in the discussion.

A few weeks ago when I went to the Northeast Organic Farmers Association winter conference in Worcester, MA, I had an interesting conversation with Kate Kerivan, the owner of Bug Hill Farm in Western Massachusetts. Bug Hill is a very small farm that organically grows black currants and bottles the juice.

I have seen currant juice in the supermarket from time-to-time but there are very few brands that offer it.  And, the ones that I have tasted before either weren’t organic or just didn’t make much of an impression.

So, when I spoke with Kate and tasted her product, my interest was piqued again.

The nutritional benefits of black currants never escaped me.  According to the research that I’ve seen, they have significantly higher levels of antioxidants than blueberries and have three times the amount of Vitamin C than oranges.

Furthermore, they are rich in a phytochemical called anthocyanidin, which has anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties. Read more »

NOFA LOGOOn Saturday, the Northeast Organic Farmers Association (NOFA) held its winter conference in Worcester, Massachusetts, and I was able to spend the afternoon at the event.

With so many great speakers and vendors, I didn’t have time to see everything.  These were my personal highlights.

* Interview with Joel Salatin The keynote speaker and celebrity of the conference was Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms in Virginia.  If you saw Food, Inc., Joel was one of the stars and the organic farmer featured in the movie.  Over the past 25 years or so, he has authored six books and has been featured in nearly every major television and print media outlet.

I had the good fortune to interview Joel, and the video will be uploaded shortly.  As a huge fan of all things organic, getting a one-on-one with Joel was a big thrill. Read more »
