479° Popcorn stands apart from the competition with its incredibly exotic and sophisticated array of flavors.

Last night, a few friends of mine and I sampled these seven:

– Chipotle and Caramel Almonds

– Pimentòn de la Vera

– Madras Coconut Curry and Cashews

– Ginger Sesame Caramel

– Black Truffle and White Cheddar

– Vietnamese Cinnamon Sugar

– Fleur de Sel Caramel

My favorite was the Black Truffle and Cheddar followed by the Pimentòn de la Vera, a smoky, sweet and salty surprise. Read more »

I was in my local organic market the other day and I stumbled across this tiny blue box of organic licorice. Yes, organic licorice.

When I think of licorice, I am reminded of the packs of red Twizzlers that I used to devour as a kid. Not exactly a pleasant thought, to be honest.

This organic licorice by Zot is apparently made in Italy using only “the finest organically grown licorice plant root.” The other ingredient in the product is organic anise flavor.

While I have always been used to chewing licorice, the Zot organic licorice is slightly different. This licorice comes in tiny pellets and you just suck on them, like you would a breath mint.

My Take: Much to my surprise, I liked it a lot. It was refreshing, slightly bitter and quite enjoyable.

I could definitely see myself buying it again.

I saw many cool non-organic products (both food and non-food ones) at Expo West and here are the five that impressed me the most.

ENDANGERED SPECIES ECO-FRIENDLY TOYS

I don’t think there was one product, either organic food or non-organic food, that captivated me more than these eco-friendly kids toys.

The paper for the coloring kit is made from reclaimed limestone, and is bleach-free, waterproof, erasable and environmentally degradable.  And, the crayons use soy ink.

I just absolutely flipped over these Endangered Species products. Read more »

NURTURME BABY FOOD

NurturMe is dehydrated organic baby food in powder form that you add to water, infant formula or even breast milk. It is convenient and lightweight, and the products are eco-friendly.

Very, very smart idea and I love the fact that the powder can be used for toddlers as well (put the powder into regular foods — the kids will get the nutritional benefits but won’t know it’s in there).

I was immediately impressed when I saw NurturMe. Read more »

As I have written about many times before, I am a big fan of palm sugar. This alternative sweetener is sustainable, low on the Glycemic Index and tastes great.

Palm sugar was also named one of my Top 5 Organic Food Trends for 2011.

When I was in the supermarket the other day and scouring the shelves looking for something new, I stumbled across PalmSweet by Organic Nectars.

I immediately said to myself “Wow, this is really interesting.”

At closer glance, I realized that PalmSweet is nothing more than palm sugar but in powder form.

While it may seem like a simple and obvious idea, the company claims that PalmSweet is the very first powdered coconut palm sugar and I believe them. I have yet to run across this product before. Read more »

As I have written about many times before, I am a water fanatic. I like clean, ultra-purified water and have a four-stage filter (with a .015 micron filter on filter #2) in my apartment.

When I go to work, there is a Poland Spring cooler but I refuse to drink from it. Why?

The water tastes very, very off and is not purified.

So, I bring my own bottles of water to work each day. This may sound crazy to some people but drinking high quality water is essential to staying healthy.

Given that I take so much effort to drink good water, the type of bottle that I use is also of great importance.

I used to drink from a BPA-free plastic bottle. The problem with that is that it is still plastic and is leaching other chemicals into the water. Read more »

It doesn’t happen very often but I had one of those moments the other day. Yes, one of those moments when I come across an organic product that really blows me away.

The last time I felt this way was when I discovered Grower Pete’s Lettuce.

This time it was the pressed organic pomegranate juice at Organic Avenue, a well-known raw food and juice take-out place here in NYC.

Most organic pomegranate juice that can be purchased at a supermarket is either from concentrate or is mixed in with other juices.

The one that I got at Organic Avenue wasn’t pasteurized or made from concentrate or mixed in with any other juice. Furthermore, and most importantly, it was freshly pressed.

As I write about often, I am huge fan of pressed organic juice. Not only is it more nutritious but it just tastes better. Read more »
