Ever Seen One of These Before? I Hadn't Until The Other Day - An Organic Gold Nugget Mandarin

When I was in my local organic market the other day, a handful of unconventionally-looking oranges were sitting in a back shelf. I had never seen anything that look like these and then asked the guy working there a question. “Do you these come like this?”

I don’t know why it has been so difficult lately but it has taken me several days to find an organic coconut oil that I wanted to buy.

Yesterday, I stumbled across Artisana’s Organic Coconut Oil and immediately picked it up.

The Requirements

There are three main things that I have to see when buying coconut oil.

1) It has to be organic This goes without saying.

2) It has to be in a glass jar As I have written about before, I carry glass water bottles to work and want to use glass, instead of plastic, as much as I can.

I often see several different brands of coconut oil in plastic containers. Regardless of how badly I want or need the coconut oil, I don’t buy it and prefer to wait in order to get something that I am happy with. Read more »

When I was at Expo West this past Spring, I was talking with Jerry Zeifman, president of Health Matters America, a distributor of various organic foods, and asked him what he eats for breakfast.

Jerry, who looks looks about 10 years younger than his actual age, told me that he drinks smoothies filled with superfoods and uses organic herbal tea as his base.

Immediately, I thought to myself, “Using tea in a smoothie? Yeah, that makes total sense. Why didn’t I think of that?”

While I had been making the exact same smoothies as Jerry, I was using Brazil nut milk instead of organic tea.

I have since cut back on nut milk and make it about twice per week but am now incorporating tea a majority of the time, thanks to Jerry. Read more »

If you were able to get inside of my head, you would quickly realize that I spend an inordinate amount of time trying to figure what I should be eating and what supplements I should be taking.

(For those people who have seen my kitchen cabinets, they know that I take A LOT of supplements and the reason I don’t take more is strictly because of financial reasons.)

When it comes to food, I am constantly researching, learning and talking to people in order to educate myself the best that I can.

Questions that always pop up include:

– Am I juicing enough?

– Am I eating enough greens? Read more »

Ever Heard of Einkorn Pasta? Well, You're Not Alone

I get a lot of emails from people wanting me to review their products or asking me if I want samples. While it is not always the case, these products usually fall into one of three categories: 1) they’re not certified organic; 2) they’re a nutriceutical; or 3) they’re something that I know of already. I get a lot of emails from people wanting me to review their products or asking me if I want samples.

While it is not always the case, these products usually fall into one of three categories: 1) they’re not certified organic; 2) they’re a nutriceutical; or 3) they’re something that I know of already.

For the most part, I learn about new products at industry trade shows, such as Expo West, or when I’m at organic supermarkets scouring the shelves.

Recently, however, I was contacted via email from someone who wanted me to take a look at einkorn pasta.

When I read her note, I did a double take.

I said to myself, “Einkorn pasta? I’ve never heard of this before. What the heck is it?” Read more »

Whenever I go to the prepared foods section at my local organic market, one of the most appetizing dishes is always the couscous.

Yet for many people, eating couscous is just not an option. They either don’t want to eat wheat or they are a celiac, someone whose body cannot tolerate gluten.

So when I heard about Lundberg‘s gluten-free couscous, I was immediately intrigued. I had never of heard of such a thing and wondered if it would taste the same.

Last night, I made some of this gluten-free couscous and was very impressed.

Instead of wheat, Lundberg uses fire roasted brown rice. While the texture is not exactly the same or as light as couscous made from wheat, it is still fluffy and does not have the heaviness of normal rice that you might expect. Read more »

One advantage of spending time in different parts of the country is that I get to discover smaller organic brands that are sold regionally and are not available just yet in New York City.

Having spent the last few days in Denver with my family, I have made multiple trips to the local Whole Foods and one product in particular has made a big impression on me — the Nutty Nori Chips by a company called Food on Purpose.

I have eaten a similar type of nori chip in the past but these are absolutely fantastic. Read more »
