My Recent Dinner at Quintessence in NYC

My Recent Dinner at Quintessence in NYC

Recently I had dinner at Quintessence in NYC. Quintessence is an organic raw food restaurant in the East Village that I enjoy very much. For those unfamiliar with raw food restaurants, everything is vegan and nothing is cooked above 118 degrees. So, why do I like going to Quintessence?

GustOrganics' Alberto Gonzalez on Having a Certified Organic Restaurant

In this interview, I sit down with Alberto Gonzalez, the owner of GustOrganics. What makes GustOrganics very unusual is that it is a certified organic restaurant. In this interview, I sit down with Alberto Gonzalez, the owner of GustOrganics. What makes GustOrganics very unusual is that it is a certified organic restaurant.

While there are plenty of organic restaurants in NYC, GustOrganics is the only one that is certified as organic by a third-party certification agency, NOFA-NY.

Alberto discusses with me what it means to be certified organic, what percentage of his food is organic and what the process was like to become certified.

The fact that GustOrganics is certified clearly demonstrates his incredible commitment to organic. Well-done, Alberto! I hope many other restauranteurs follow your lead.

Maria Rodale, one of my favorite people in the organic food industry, has just come out with her Top 10 farm-to-table restaurants.

For those who don’t know Maria, she has some serious street cred in the organic world.

– Her grandfather, J.I Rodale, started the organic food movement in the U.S. in the 1940s with the publication of Organic Farming and Gardening magazine (now known as Organic Gardening).

– Maria Rodale has published several books including Organic Manifesto: How Organic Farming Can Heal Our Planet, Feed the World, and Keep Us Safe. This is a must-read book for everyone. It clearly and succinctly explains why organic food, and not GMO-food, is the only solution to feed the planet.

– Maria Rodale’s family started The Rodale Institute, which has been researching organic agriculture for the last 60 years.

Maria has compiled her Top 10 favorite farm-to-table restaurants. The restaurants are in both the U.S. and Canada, and meet her criteria of being “locally sourced organic food, cleanly cooked; not too pretentious; and most important of all, delicious and yummiful!” Read more »

I just found out that there is a FREE online version of the very well-done documentary called The Future of Food, and I wanted to pass this information along ASAP.

If you have never seen this movie, please watch it as it is extremely important. It gives a very detailed review of how GMO-food evolved in our country and the tremendous danger that it presents to consumers, farmers and our entire planet.

As I have said many times before, the argument that GMO-food is the only way to feed the world is one of the most flawed arguments that I have ever heard. This is propaganda that the biotech industry and BigAg wants us to believe but is simply not true.

Three things in the movie that I want to point out: Read more »

The other night I took an old friend of mine from Nantucket to One Lucky Duck, one of my favorite organic restaurants in NYC. About 20 years ago we used to work together at The Wauwinet Inn and after not seeing each other for more than a decade, I bumped into him on the street the other day. He’s a super guy who is now doing big things in the photography world and enjoys coming to organic places with me.

One Lucky Duck is the takeaway, less formal, much smaller part of Pure Food and Wine. There are only three tables (all close together) at One Lucky Duck, which makes for a very social environment. In fact, it is where I met one of my very dear friends, an amazing woman who lives in India but just happened to be visiting New York for a few weeks earlier this summer.

Now, onto the food. One Lucky Duck is a raw food restaurant, which means that nothing is cooked above 118 degrees and all the food is vegan. No meat, no dairy, no sugar. Read more »

Destruction of GMO-Crops is on Hold - For Now

Last week, I wrote about how a federal judge ordered the destruction of GMO-crops for the first time ever. Last week, I wrote about how a federal judge ordered the destruction of GMO-crops for the first time ever. These genetically-modified sugar beets should have been uprooted already but that has been put on hold.

To no one’s surprise, Monsanto was not going to just sit there and let this happen. So, the company appealed this court decision and now the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has granted a temporary stay, which will block the destruction of these crops until December 23rd.

It is possible that the December 23rd date will get pushed back even further but that is all we know as of now.

This issue of GM-sugar beets is a continuing saga between our government (policies that started with President Bush and continue with President Obama) and proponents of organic food.

I’ll keep you posted on any new developments.
