TAKE ACTION: Tell President Obama, USDA to Stop Undermining Organics

Despite the fact that organic is more popular than ever and companies such as Walmart and Target are significantly boosting their offerings, one would think that support for organic in Washington, D.C. would be growing as well. Sadly, that is not the case.

Not only is support for organic not growing, the Obama administration and his USDA are doing everything they can to weaken organic standards and dismantle the authority of the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB), an independent, 15-member advisory board which helps to oversee the industry and make important recommendations.

THE SUNSET RULE

One of the most important policies that we have in organic is something called The Sunset Rule.  What this means is the following. Read more »

(The Dirty Dozen list below has been updated to reflect the 2017 results.)

Just the other day, The Environmental Working Group (EWG) announced its “Dirty Dozen”  – the 12 most pesticide-laden fruits and vegetables that people should avoid.

Interestingly enough, there has been an outcry calling for the EWG to cease publishing its Dirty Dozen List. I’ll get to this absurd demand in a minute.

Let’s first talk about the Dirty Dozen, and there are a few things to keep in mind:

1) In case you are shopping and can’t remember what is on the list, the basic rule of thumb is this: the fruits or vegetables that have nothing to be peeled off (no skin) generally have the most pesticides.

2) If money is tight and not everyone in the household can eat all organic, kids are the absolute priority. Their bodies are still developing and are very susceptible to the toxic dangers that synthetic pesticides present.

3) If you think that washing with water or scrubbing the fruits with a produce wash is going to take off the pesticides, do not be fooled. The pesticide is already deep inside of the cells of the food, and no wash is going to remove the chemicals. Read more »

In case you hadn’t seen it before, above is the official television advertisement that has been running in California for the Yes on 37 campaign.

We are trailing by 10 percentage points in the polls, and I got an email today from the campaign that they are still looking for additional money to help purchase more ad buys. If you’d like to help, you can do so HERE.

How does the above ad differ from the opposition’s ads? Well, they are running very negative ones with huge scare tactics, telling people that their food costs are going to soar.

Also, they’re even rolling out doctors who are saying that GMOs are safe to eat!! Can you imagine? Read more »

We are heading into the homestretch here with Proposition 37, California’s GMO-labeling initiative, and every single dollar that we can raise is absolutely critical. Why?

Our opposition has accumulated a $40 million war chest, and they using it to bombard the public with $1 million dollars a day of misleading tv and radio ads.

As a result, our lead in the polls has diminished, and as it stands now, we are only ahead by 8 percentage points – 48% to 40%.

To help raise money for Yes on Prop 37, Dr. Bronner’s has generously donated an assortment of soaps for me to give away to one winner, valued at $50. Read more »

The landlocked country of Bhutan, located in Asia on the Eastern end of the Himalayas, is not your average, run of the mill nation. Why?

Well, they believe that the Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product when measuring a country’s progress. Included in this calculation for happiness is how well the environment is protected and nurtured.

In a NPR report that I read the other day, Bhutan has set a goal for itself that every other country should follow: it wants to become 100% organic.

And as we know, going 100% organic would avoid having to using very risky GMOs and toxic pesticides, which pollute the water supply and harm the ecosystem, and would also provide the Bhutanese citizens with the healthiest food possible. Read more »

UPDATE AS OF 11/20/13: I HAVE SINCE BEEN INFORMED THAT YORGANIC USES VERY LITTLE ORGANIC OR “ORGANIC WHENEVER IT IS AVAILABLE”. THEREFORE, I HAVE REMOVED IT FROM MY FAVORITE ORGANIC RESTAURANTS IN NYC LIST AND NO LONGER FREQUENT THIS ESTABLISHMENT.

Almost two decades ago, I worked in investment banking and our offices were near Wall Street in downtown Manhattan. This was many years before my organic eating habits developed, so I wasn’t overly concerned about from where I bought my lunch or dinner.

I often think what I would I do if I had my office in that part of the city now and the answer is simple: eat at Yorganic. A LOT. Read more »
