Insecticides are Officially Linked to the Disappearance of Bees. Am I Surprised? Not at All.

The very serious issue we face with colony collapse disorder (CCD) is something that should be on everyone’s radar screen. Basically, the bees are disappearing. And why should we care exactly that the bees are disappearing? Well, bees pollinate our plants and without bees, we have four years to live. While many people believe that […]

Basically, the bees are disappearing. And why should we care exactly that the bees are disappearing?

Well, bees pollinate our plants and without bees, we have four years to live.

While many people believe that CCD is a result of GMOs and the toxic chemicals that we spray on them, there is incredible denial from the chemical industry.

In an article published the other day in Environmental Science & Technology titled “Assessment of the Environmental Exposure of Honeybees to Particulate Matter Containing Neonicotinoid Insecticides Coming from Corn Coated Seeds,” new research identifies a direct link between the bees dying and insecticides used on corn. There is a new arsenic controversy in the news. Instead of apple juice, this time it is organic brown rice syrup.

Researchers from Dartmouth College announced in Environmental Health Perspectives that they discovered very high levels of inorganic (not naturally occurring) arsenic in organic baby products, whose top ingredient was brown rice syrup.

While the EPA regulates the amount of arsenic in water, no more than 10 parts per billion is allowed, there are no such standards for arsenic in food, except for fruit juice.

So, when the researchers did their testing, they found that the arsenic levels in the organic baby food were 6 times higher than the allowable limits for water.

Even though other products, such as energy shots and cereal bars failed this arsenic test as well, the organic baby formula raised more of a red flag because this is the primary source of nutrition for babies. Read more »

A year and a half ago, I spoke with Gary Hirshberg about the Stonyfield Café at the U.S. Open tennis tournament and asked him if we would be seeing his organic restaurant at other sporting events, such as baseball or football.

Fast-forward 18 months later: Even though it isn’t the Stonyfield Café serving up the fare, organic food will be available for the first time ever at this year’s Super Bowl.

The introduction of organic food at the Super Bowl is the result of a partnership between HOMEGROWN Concessions, a food entity owned by Farm Aid, and Centerplate, the organization who is responsible for all of the concession stands at Lucas Oil Stadium, the venue hosting Sunday’s championship game in Indianapolis.

The food provided by HOMEGROWN Concessions is sustainably produced by local and/or organic family farmers who grow their food in an ecologically-friendly manner, such as grass-fed or without the use of GMOs. Additionally, HOMEGROWN Concessions showcases the farmer story and serves its food in compostable or recyclable packaging.

The organic offerings available to Super Bowl attendees will include: Read more »

Let me say right up front that I support the USDA’s national organic certification program. Why?

Because it is the only nationally-recognized and accepted system we have in place for organic standards.

I firmly believe that the more people we have participating and engaged in the system, the stronger it will become. Conversely, the more people who opt out of the system, the weaker it will become.

That being said, it is by no means perfect. And just as is in every other area of our society, big companies in the organic sector use lobbyists in Washington D.C. to enact policies that will benefit them financially.

Even though organic has social ideals that many other industries do not, we can’t forget that organic is big, big business – $27 billion a year.

As I wrote about recently, the USDA’s National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) agreed to allow illegal, synthetically-derived additives – commonly marketed as DHA and ARA — into certified organic products. Read more »

Yesterday, I was on the media conference call for Just Label It, the nationwide campaign to get genetically-modified foods (GMOs) labeled.

On the call we saw a preview of the fantastic new Just Label It video (WATCH BELOW) and we also heard from:

* Gary Hirshberg, Chairman of Stonyfield, who recently resigned as CEO to dedicate more time to this very important cause.

* Robyn O’Brien, leading food safety advocate and author of the acclaimed book The Unhealthy Truth: One Mother’s Shocking Investigation into the Dangers of America’s Food Supply — and What Every Family Can Do to Protect Itself.

* Robert Kenner, writer, director and producer of the documentary Food, Inc. and the Just Label It video below.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS DISCUSSED

– The general benchmark for labeling, of any sorts, is materiality. Is something about the food materially different that would warrant a label? Read more »

One topic that frequently gets discussed is whether it is preferable to buy organic or to buy local.

To many people, especially those in Brooklyn, there can be nothing better than local. In a recent blog post, I address this very issue in detail and discuss why I choose organic.

My friend Alberto Gonzalez, owner of NYC’s only certified organic restaurant GustOrganics, wrote an excellent piece in The Huffington Post yesterday about this subject but distilled it down even further.

What he wants is transparency.

Unfortunately, the word “natural” has become a completely abused marketing term, stands for almost nothing, and is the reason why Naked Juice, Wesson Oil and Frito-Lay are facing class action lawsuits.

Therefore, “organic” has become the term which identifies the “cleanest” foods that we can eat. Read more »
