Public television is now officially promoting organic, and I could not be happier!

In partnership with Whole Foods, PBS Kids has launched a program called “Fantastic Organic”, which will provide fun, easy-to-use tools and educational resources to assist families in making educated decisions about organic food and to encourage healthy lifestyles.

The “Fantastic Organic” campaign will utilize online resources from PBS Parents, PBS KIDS and Whole Foods to help families learn to cook, shop and explore organic food together.

In addition, select Whole Foods Market stores will host in-store events for kids and families to share facts, tips, and advice about buying organic products. Read more »

I was at the Tribeca Whole Foods in New York City this morning to hear a presentation by John Mackey, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of the company.

The crux of what John Mackey discussed was healthy eating and how the overarching philosophy of Whole Foods is to improve people’s health by emphasizing a plant-based diet.

Reason #1 – The average conventionally grown apple has more pesticide residue on it than any other fruit or vegetable.

Last year, I put up a post about how arsenic was temporarily banned for use in conventional chickens.

Whether conventional chicken growers actually paid attention to the ban is anyone’s guess, but a column I read yesterday in the New York Times just made me shake my head even further.

In his column, Nicholas Kristof talked about recently released studies that suggest that poultry on factory farms are routinely fed caffeine, active ingredients of Tylenol and Benadryl, banned antibiotics and arsenic.

He went on to say that chicken from China showed that it contained an antidepressant whose active ingredient is in Prozac. Yes, chickens are getting antidepressants. Can you imagine? Read more »
