The Stanford Report on Organic Food and Undisclosed Ties to Big Ag / GMO Advocates

Stanford’s report on organic food, which interpreted data in a very questionable manner and did not adequately take into account the harm that pesticide exposure causes to young children and fetuses, created the perception that people don’t need to buy organic – something that couldn’t be more untrue. Stanford’s report on organic food, which interpreted data in a very questionable manner and did not adequately take into account the harm that pesticide exposure causes to young children and fetuses, created the perception that people don’t need to buy organic – something that couldn’t be more untrue.

As I suspected from the beginning, this whole study was a big effort to undermine the credibility of organic with the all-important California ballot initiative to label GMOs, Proposition 37, right around the corner.

And despite the fact that the authors claimed that no outside funding was received to complete this study, in an attempt to create an aura of impartiality, there do appear to be serious conflicts of interest which had not been fully disclosed. Read more »

As I have been writing about lately, Proposition 37, the ballot initiative in California that would require the mandatory labeling of GMOs, will be voted on in November and is the most important event in the industry since the USDA approved the National Organic Program more than a decade ago.

Up until this point, however, Whole Foods has been very silent on this issue since the company generally stays out of food politics.

But just minutes ago I got an email from my contact at Whole Foods that blew me away.

Whole Foods has now come out and endorsed Proposition 37! Why? Read more »

Late Monday night, I read about the Stanford University report on organic food, which said that organic and conventionally-grown food offered similar nutritional benefits, and have spent the last few days processing this news.

Here are my key takeaways.

INTELLECTUAL HONESTY MUST REIGN SUPREME

Based on the parameters that the Stanford professors used, it was obvious that organic was going to be the clear loser before they even got started.

As you may already know, I regularly post an Organic Link Love column where I curate the most interesting and relevant organic food news stories from that week.

However, when I come across something exceptional, I’ll oftentimes dedicate an entire blog post to it.

One such story was in The New York Times the other day and was about about famed money manager Jeremy Grantham and his organic food mission.

In the food world, there is a David vs. Goliath war going on – Big Ag and the chemical industries have invested hundreds of millions of dollars to influence food policy and spread propaganda while organic remains a poorly represented and under-funded movement.

As a result, the U.S. does not label genetically-modified food (GMOs), politicians in Washington D.C. put corporate profits ahead of the healthy food needs of the citizens they represent, and many people are falsely led to believe that GMOs are the only way to feed the world. Read more »

For those people who don’t know, there is an incredibly important ballot initiative taking place in California later this fall called Proposition 37.

As I wrote about the other day, Proposition 37 would require the mandatory labeling of genetically-modified food products (GMOs) in California, and the citizens of that state will be voting on it in just a few months.

The opposition – Big Ag, chemical companies, major food corporations and even some parent companies of organic brands – has been donating millions and millions of dollars to defeat this measure. Why?

Because these companies don’t want people to know that what they are eating has been genetically-modified. It is better for these businesses that consumers remain in the dark and not ask any questions about what GMOs could mean for their health. Read more »

In yet another study, we have more evidence that organic is a healthier choice.

A report out of the University of Barcelona claims that organic tomatoes have a higher amount of antioxidants than conventional tomatoes.

Researchers used liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry to determine that organic tomatoes have a greater amount of phenolic compounds or polyphenols.
