When I put up my post the other day about the juicing that I have been doing, I got back a good number of responses from people via email and Twitter that they are doing green smoothies as well.

Just to clarify, a green smoothie is made by a blender instead of a juicer. An example would be blending kale, spinach, avocados, celery and water, and then drinking it all.

The main reason why people prefer a green smoothie over a green juice is that they want the fiber. A green smoothie retains all of the fiber, and fiber is very important for elimination.

Victoria Boutenko, a household name in the raw food world, is a huge advocate of green smoothies. She has written books about green smoothies and documents how they have transformed lives. Victoria Boutenko also believes that all fruits and vegetables can be combined.

Dr. Brian Clement, another household name in the raw food world and Co-Director of Hippocrates Health Institute, thinks that green smoothies are very unhealthy. Read more »

In what is quickly becoming my favorite place to have brunch in New York City, Sun in Bloom in Brooklyn is where I ventured out to this past weekend.

Sun in Bloom is an organic restaurant on the edge of Park Slope. This hidden gem (well, I would say hidden to people who live in Manhattan — not sure if it is hidden to Brooklynites) serves some fantastic vegan food, both cooked and raw.

It was very, very cold in New York City this past Saturday, so I started off with the Miso Broth. Read more »

While many of you know that I am huge fan of freshly-made pressed organic juice, I do drink bottled juice as well.

I’ve been drinking Italian Volcano Blood Orange Juice for a few years now and have really come to love it as of late.

There are three primary reasons why I like it so much:

1) The taste is very, very unique. It is slightly tart, very refreshing and unlike any orange juice that I’ve had.

Also, The Italian Volcano Blood Orange Juice tastes incredibly healthy. As the juice goes into your mouth and down your throat, you can almost feel the nutrients pouring into your body.

2) The orange trees are grown in phenomenal soil. On livingmaxwell, I tend to repeat a few different phrases over and over again.

One, I am a water fanatic. Two, it is all about the soil.

Very healthy soil means that the food grown in it will be very nutritious. And vice-versa. Read more »

CHIA SEEDS

With people on a constant search for protein-rich food, chia seeds will become the popular choice. Again.

Chia seeds were a central component of the Aztec and Mayan diets and supposedly were the main food that Aztec warriors carried with them when they went off to fight. It was considered a sacred food back then. Read more »

Yesterday, I went to Organic Avenue‘s store in the West Village and something pretty unexpected happened.

After drinking my shot of E3 Live, I sat on the bench outside and started gazing into the sun. Increasing my Vitamin D levels is a real priority these days.

As I was sitting there, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, one of the world’s most famous chefs, walked by me and went into the store to return his glass bottles of juice. On his way out, I stopped him and asked him a few questions.

The one that immediately came to mind was whether Organic Avenue’s pressed juice was now for sale in his restaurants. When I interviewed Denise Mari, founder of Organic Avenue, at Fashion Week a few months ago, she mentioned that they would soon be selling them there.

Jean-Georges confirmed that they are available at three of his restaurants, including ABC Kitchen, his fantastic upscale organic one, and that they are selling very well. I wondered whether he would eventually press the juice himself in-house but he said no. He appeared to be very happy with the current arrangement and didn’t seem interested in dealing with the glass bottles. Read more »

Organic Avenue, an organic take-out place that sells pressed juice, juice cleanses and raw vegan food, now has a presence at Fashion Week.

Needless to say, this is a very positive development. For the many people who work during Fashion Week (fashion journalists, buyers, models, etc.), their days consist of running from show to show to show to show with little to no time to eat well.

Organic Avenue has set up a pop-up juice bar in Lincoln Center, the new location of Fashion Week, so that these individuals can get some proper nutrition when they are on the run.

The limited menu includes: watermelon juice, coconut water, green juice (Green Love), cacao smoothies, gazpacho, lemon lime shakes and purified alkaline water.

Organic Avenue at Fashion Week is a phenomenal sight and a continuation of a very promising trend that I am seeing – organic restaurants expanding to non-traditional venues.

Stonyfield Cafe, an organic/natural cafe, set up shop at the US Open tennis tournament this year and organic food trucks are popping up all over the place.

If you are at Fashion Week at Lincoln Center and or are in the Upper West Side in Manhattan, stop by Organic Avenue’s juice bar.

It is located in the lobby at Alice Tully Hall, located on Broadway between 65th and 66th.
