Last night, I got home late and put the television on. Since there is something wrong with my cable box (I keep forgetting to call Time Warner), it was on TLC and I could not change the channel.

So, I found myself watching a show called Extreme Couponing. The camera follows very, very serious coupon collectors as they prepare for and go on a massive shopping trip to the supermarket.

Don’t think for one second that these individuals are casual coupon collectors. After all, there is a reason why TLC calls it Extreme Couponing.

They keep coupons in 3-ring binders, have elaborate filing systems, create spreadsheets of their shopping lists, bring full notebooks to the market, jump into dumpsters looking for coupons and steal coupon-laden newspapers from nearby foreclosed properties. Read more »

The other day I did a post on the fantastic organic Nutty Nori Chips by Food on Purpose. When I bought the chips, I figured that the nori had been purchased many months before the earthquake in Japan and that there wasn’t much cause for concern.

Yet it did bring up an important issue, one that many readers have since contacted me about.

Given that so many people eat sushi or vegetable sushi rolls, is it safe to eat nori?

A Primer on Nori

Nori is a sea vegetable that is almost exclusively grown in the waters off of Japan, Korea and China. Read more »

Even though I do not have any children or a pregnant wife (or a wife, for that matter), I give a tremendous amount of thought as to how I would feed my kids.

And given that many of my friends are now pregnant or already have young kids, it is interesting to observe how these parents make decisions about food.

The one thing that I notice is that organic food becomes much more of a priority when children come into the picture.

For many people out there who are completely new to this area and don’t know where to begin, these are are my Top 5 Organic Food Tips for Pregnant Women and New Mothers.

1) Start Now — While You Are Pregnant This is the biggest mistake I see — women don’t start early enough.

I come across many mothers who are very enthusiastic and adamant about feeding their kids organic food. Read more »

Have We Been Misled? 5 Organic Foods That Should Make You Think Twice

I spend an inordinate amount of time learning about the healthiest and newest organic food products available. I spend an inordinate amount of time learning about the healthiest and newest organic food products available. Through my research at the various trade shows (Natural Products Expo East and Natural Products Expo West are my two favorites), talking to industry contacts, roaming supermarket aisles, speaking with as many well-informed food people as I can and reading books, I have come to the following conclusion:

You can take almost any food in the world and some health expert will have something good to say about it while a different health expert will have something bad to say about it.

So, what I do is educate myself as much as I can and then make my own decision about whether I should be eating it or not.

The following five organic foods seem to be the most controversial. While books could be written on all of the foods below and by no means am I covering all of the pros/cons of each, I will try to highlight the most salient points. Read more »

I understand that I may be on the extreme end of things, in terms of my interest in and passion for organic food. In this regard, I know I kind of live in a bubble.

So, it is great to see that many other people are seeing organic food as a requisite to good health as well.

Funded by the Organic Trade Association and KIWI Magazine, a recent survey of consumers found that 41% of parents are buying more organic food today than one year ago. This figure is up significantly from the 31% who reported organic purchases in 2009 over the prior year.

The survey, which was conducted between August 11th – 27th this year, found that organic food purchases were spurred by three main reasons. Read more »

At this year’s US Open tennis tournament in New York City, Stonyfield had its Stonyfield Cafe outside center court where they served organic and natural food. This was the first time that I can ever remember organic food being served at a major sporting event, and I hope this becomes a regular occurrence.

At the tournament, I caught up with Stonyfield’s President and CE-Yo, Gary Hirshberg, where we talked about the the success of the Stonyfield Cafe and its future plans.

A side note: When I started livingmaxwell about ten months ago, one of my goals was to interview Gary Hirshberg. So, making this happen was a big thrill.

Not only was Gary was featured in the movie Food, Inc. but he is one of the most influential figures in the organic food movement in our country. Aside from his tremendous commitment to organic and the environment, Gary believes that business is the most powerful tool to change the world — something that I agree with 100%.

Also, many thanks to Gary’s wife, Meg Hirshberg (a fellow Brown University alum), who did a great job shooting this segment.

A few days ago, the President’s Cancer Panel, a group of independent doctors and researchers, released its annual report called “Reducing our Environmental Cancer Risk: What We Can Do Now”. Needless to say, the connection between the amount of chemicals/harmful toxins in our environment and the high incidence of cancer is incredibly strong, and decisive action needs to be taken.

In its letter to the President, the Panel “urges you most strongly to use the power of your office to remove the carcinogens and other toxins from our food, water and air that needlessly increase health care costs, cripple our Nation’s productivity, and devastate lives.”

The report recommends that in order to decrease exposure to pesticides, individuals should choose “food grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers” and “exposure to antibiotics, growth hormones and toxic run-off from livestock feed lots can be minimized by eating free-range meat without these medications.”

Essentially, they are saying to eat organic food because conventional food is laced with dangerous chemicals that increase our chances for cancer.

And, this is coming from an independent panel not paid for by special interest or industry groups.  The two main authors are LaSalle Leffall, Jr., M.D., from Howard University and Margaret Kripke, PhD, from the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

It is a long report and covers many areas (not just food) so I will give you some of the most salient points/information. Read more »
