In a previous post, I wrote that milk is the most important organic product that a family can buy.

But milk is by no means the only item that people should be concerned about.

The worst offender on the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen list are apples.

Forbes magazine recently did an excellent piece talking about five reasons to eat organic apples, and I wanted to share the highlights with you and provide commentary. To read the full article, click here.

Reason #1 – The average conventionally grown apple has more pesticide residue on it than any other fruit or vegetable.

Data from the Environmental Working Group showed that 98% of 700 apples tested had pesticides on them and that 48 different pesticides appeared. WOW!!!! Read more »

When you go into the produce section of Whole Foods, you’ll notice signs that say “ANDI Score” with a number associated with that respective food.

Created by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, ANDI stands for “Aggregate Nutrient Density Index” and ranks a food’s nutrient density on a scale from 1 to 1000.

The ANDI scores are calculated by evaluating an extensive range of micronutrients, including vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and antioxidant capacities, and by dividing the nutrient level of a food by its caloric content (N/C). Read more »

Here is what I have been up to lately, in regards to juicing.

1) Practically every single day, I am doing four ounces of wheatgrass. A while ago, I wrote a post about my love/hate affair with wheatgrass but let me tell you something — it is back on in a big, big way!

When I don’t drink my four ounces, I just don’t feel the same. I don’t feel as clean and I don’t feel as healthy. My body is now actually craving the stuff.

2) On top of that, I am drinking green juice 4-6 days per week.

I always use a base of celery or cucumber and then add in one or two of the following: kale, asparagus, dandelion weeds, burdock, radishes, bok choy, and romaine.  Read more »

These non-food products at the 2012 Natural Products Expo West Trade Show really stood out to me, and I look forward to giving them all a try.

DALE AUDREY AYURVEDIC ORAL PULLING RINSE

I am well aware of neem oil as a dental solution in Ayurveda but had never heard of an oil pulling mouth rinse before.

According to Dale Audrey, a long-time dental hygienist, Ayurvedic practitioners believe that oil pulling not only cleanses the mouth but also pulls toxins from the body.

The product is alcohol-free, gluten-free and vegan. Its ingredients include organic sesame oil, organic safflower oil, organic flavors, organic clove bud oil, tocopheryl acetate (Vitamin E), citric acid, organic pomegranate extract, organic olive oil, organic neem and organic myrrh.

In this video, I’ll take you onto the banana plantation of EARTH University and show you the issues that they have to deal with when growing bananas in such humid conditions.

Several months I wrote a story about Bisphenol-A (BPA) in organic food cans.

The post continues to get a lot of views because people are becoming increasingly aware and concerned about the packaging that their food comes in, even in organic food products.

With news coming out of Maine this morning, parents now need to take extra precaution about what they feed their young kids. Why?

BPA, which is known as a developmental, neural, and reproductive toxin, was found in 11 of 12 baby and toddler foods tested by The Alliance for a Clean and Healthy Maine.

Well, I go food shopping A LOT and pretty much only buy whatever I need for the next meal that I’ll be eating. I have the good fortune of being able to do this because an amazing organic market is literally less a one minute walk from my apartment

Plus, I LOVE going food shopping and making multiple trips to the market in one day is not exactly a burden. Staring at all of the amazing fruits and vegetables in the produce section is one of my favorite things to do.

Even though I do tend to “buy on demand”, you’ll pretty much always find these 10 organic foods in my kitchen:

COCONUT OIL I am a huge fan of coconut oil.  Not only is it high in lauric acid and great to use after a workout but it is one of the few oils that you can safely heat and cook with. (Olive oil is not one of them.)

Aside from using organic coconut oil in my smoothies, I use it as a moisturizer as well. Read more »
