In a bombshell announcement last night, which was first reported in The New York Times, Campbell Soup Company has broken away from its peers and has decided that it will disclose all genetically-engineered ingredients in its products.

CEO Denise Morrison announced to her company:

“At Campbell, we are unleashing the power of our Purpose, Real food that matters for life’s moments. Our Purpose calls for us to acknowledge that consumers appreciate what goes into our food, and why—so they can feel good about the choices they make, for themselves and their loved ones.

Today, consistent with our Purpose, we announced our support for mandatory national labeling of products that may contain genetically modified organisms (GMO)”

Campbell has finally come to its senses and acknowledged that consumers have a right to know what they are eating.

On its website, Campbell explained this move. Highlights include: Read more »

A Very, Very Dangerous Precedent: FDA Approves Genetically-Engineered Salmon

Just a few hours ago, the FDA declared that GE-salmon is as safe to eat as non-GE salmon and has given its approval for it to be sold to consumers.

Despite the fact that:

– Over 400,000 comments were submitted demanding that genetically-engineered salmon be rejected.

– More than 300 environmental, consumer, health and animal welfare organizations, salmon and fishing groups and associations, food companies, chefs, and restaurants filed joint statements with the FDA opposing approval.

– More than 40 members of the U.S. Congress have repeatedly urged the FDA to conduct more rigorous reviews of environmental and health safety, and halt any approval process until concerns over risks, transparency and oversight have been fully satisfied.

……….the FDA refused to listen to consumer opinion and environmental concerns, and it completely placated the well-funded biotech industry.

Not only is this the first GE-fish approved, but it is the first GE-animal approved for human consumption. (This “FrankenFish” is injected with a gene from the Pacific Chinook salmon and can reach adult size in 16 to 18 months instead of 30 months for normal Atlantic salmon.) Read more »

Here are 10 organic food news stories you need to know about.

1) California just dropped a BOMBSHELL about glyphosate causing cancer.  Several months ago, the World Health Organization said that glyphosate, the primary ingredient in RoundUp, Monsanto’s $6 billion a year weed killer, was “a probable carcinogen” – which means that it “probably causes cancer”.

Now, the State of California intends to declare that that glyphosate “causes cancer”.

WOW!!!  This is major.

If California does in fact declare that glyphosate causes cancer, there needs to be very serious debate about putting warning labels on glyphosate-sprayed food.

2) September is a big month online for organic.  In September, the Organic Trade Association is running a 30-day social media #OrganicFestival aimed at bringing the entire organic industry together behind a common theme and mission to correct long-held myths and misconceptions about organic. The GMO ‘Golden Rice’ Experiment was an Ethical Disaster – One Shocking New Development

The GMO 'Golden Rice' Experiment was an Ethical Disaster - One Shocking New Development

What GMO apologists will constantly tell you is that genetically-modified food is essential to feed the world. They’ve spent so much money on lobbying and influencing politicians – $572 million from 1999 to 2010 – that a majority of people in Washington D.C. have actually come to believe this nonsense. (University of Michigan’s Catherine Badgley explains here why […]

What GMO apologists will constantly tell you is that genetically-modified food is essential to feed the world.

They’ve spent so much money on lobbying and influencing politicians – $572 million from 1999 to 2010 – that a majority of people in Washington D.C. have actually come to believe this nonsense. (University of Michigan’s Catherine Badgley explains here why organic can feed the world.)

But GMOs, we are told, won’t just feed the world. They’ll supposedly nourish it as well.

One prime example of this is GMO ‘Golden Rice’, which was touted as a way to help solve a major global health problem by providing kids adequate amounts of Vitamin A.  Read more »
