Tonight on PBS at 9PM EST, the movie Food, Inc. will be shown.

For those people who have not seen it, the movie is an absolute must-watch. You will see many shocking things including:

– How genetically-modified food is tearing up this country

– How Monsanto’s hard-ball tactics wreak havoc on the lives of farmers who try to not use its products

– How our government allows dangerous chemicals to go into our food and puts greater importance on the agenda of powerful ag-businesses instead of the health of this country

– How the USDA permits animals to be treated in the most inhumanely way possible

This movie is a serious wake-up call as to what is really going on in our food system.

Based on what you see in Food, Inc., you will walk away pretty shocked.  And, hopefully, you’ll be outraged and inspired to get involved.

On another note, I recently shot an interview with Joel Salatin, one of the stars of Food, Inc.  I hope to have it up next week.  He’s a super-nice guy who is doing some very important work down at his farm in Virginia.

You probably heard that over the weekend President Obama recess-appointed 15 people to different government posts in order to bypass Senate approval hearings.  What may have escaped you is that Islam Siddiqui was appointed as the Chief Agricultural Negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

If you care about organic food and the environment, this move should outrage you.

A lifelong pesticide lobbyist and GMO advocate, Siddiqui’s confirmation in the Senate was opposed by more than 80 environmental, small-farm and consumer groups.

Siddiqui is vice president of science and regulatory affairs at CropLife America, a trade group of biotech and pesticide companies, which is essentially a front organization for Monsanto.  CropLife has the proud distinction of many great accomplishments including fighting the initiatives of banning GMO food in California, claiming that pesticides positively impact endangered species, lobbying the Bush administration for human – and child – testing of pesticides and writing a letter to Michelle Obama urging her to use pesticides in the organic garden at the White House. Last night, I interviewed Andrew Kimbrell, the Executive Director of The Center for Food Safety (CFS), a non-profit based in Washington DC.

The website says that CFS “protects human health and the environment by curbing the proliferation of harmful food production technologies and by promoting organic and other forms of sustainable agriculture.”

In plain language, this organization battles the people who are polluting our environment and corrupting the integrity of our food supply.

What is important to note is that when CFS files lawsuits, it often succeeds.  This includes several victories against Monsanto and others.  Recent wins include: stopping GE sugar beets, halting GE crops in wildlife refugees, preserving r-BGH free labels on dairy products, and passing California law to protect farmers from the hazards of GE crops.

Andrew Kimbrell and his team are amazing advocates of organic food, and I cannot express how lucky we are to have such competent and committed people fighting for our cause in Washington.

The interview I shot with him will be up very soon, but I received an email from CFS today and wanted to share it immediately.

The organic food community is under serious attack from the USDA.  Yes, the USDA.  It is considering allowing GE alfalfa, which would have disastrous consequences for the organic food industry and the well-being of small and family farms. Read more »
