The other day I got an email from The Center for Food Safety (CFS), and it contained some very disturbing news for organic consumers.

The USDA is set to approve drought-resistant genetically-modified corn (MON 87460). Aside from the fact that it is genetically-modified, which I am adamantly against, the USDA is completely ignoring the environmental and socio-economic impacts of this corn.

According to the CFS, the USDA’s proposal:

Schuyler Grant, one of the founders of the Wanderlust Yoga Festival, talks to me about the importance of organic food at her events.

This past weekend I went to the Wanderlust Yoga Festival in Stratton, VT and had no trouble eating organic food the entire time. Before I went, however, it was a real concern of mine whether organic would be widely available.

Fortunately, Schuyler Grant has made organic food a real priority at Wanderlust.

Very quietly last week, we got some positive news on the genetically-engineered (GE) salmon front.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed an amendment that prohibits the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from using any of its FY2012 funding to approve GE-salmon.

The amendment, which was put forth by Reps. Don Young (R-AK) and Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), is part of the appropriations bill entitled The Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies Appropriations Act (H.R. 2112). It passed by a 217-203 vote.

As it stands now, the FDA, instead of the USDA, has the legal power to approve all genetically-engineered animals through its new animal drug law. Yet, industry experts have a real problem with the way that the FDA handles the approval process. Read more »

The Washington Times Op-Ed Piece Against Organic Food is Severely Misguided

In case you didn’t see it, The Washington Times just ran an op-ed piece calling for a complete moratorium on organic food. While the subtitle of this op-ed piece is “A less-than-serious look at how old technology could kill us”, there is nothing that indicates that author David Mastio is joking about anything. If you […]

Food safety is a topic on everyone’s mind these days. While organic food consumers do believe that organic is much safer than conventionally-grown food, our system is by no means fool-proof.

This week I saw two positive pieces of news in regards to food safety, and I wanted to bring them to your attention.

The first one was that a certified organic food importer called OTC-USA, based in Ephrata, PA, has decided to start residue testing on all organic produce imported from the Southern Hemisphere. OTC-USA will be working with Environmental Micro Analysis, out of Woodland CA, to do the testing and the results are available upon request.

Why is this significant? Read more »

Last week, the organic food industry scored a very important victory.

On Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a summary order concluding a long-standing lawsuit over the impact of genetically-engineered “Roundup Ready” sugar beets.

In Plain English, This Means…..

Previous court rulings have said that the USDA must complete an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) before allowing genetically-engineered “Roundup Ready” sugar beets to be planted.  These ge-sugar beets have been engineered to be resistant to Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide.

Of course, Monsanto and its allies at the USDA do not want to wait a few years until an EIS is completed. That would result in lost sales, and who knows what the EIS might say. The EIS may actually say what many of us believe to be true – that ge-crops and herbicides (1) will contaminate nearby and similar crops, such as organic sugar beets and organic chard; and (2) will contaminate the water supply and damage environmental surroundings.
