As I have gotten older, my values have become much, much more clear.

Along with my family and friends, there may be nothing more important to me than health. And to me, good health is synonymous with organic food.

Unfortunately, however, we live in a country where organic food is incredibly marginalized and deemed not that important by our leaders. Why is this?

Politicians and the regulatory bodies that they oversee, namely the USDA and FDA, are utterly beholden to Big Ag and do everything they can to placate them.

While countries such as France and the Philippines are feverishly promoting organic farming, President Obama and his policymakers are pushing a genetically-modified food agenda. Read more »

Even though genetically-modified corn is already for sale in the produce section, the entrance of Monsanto into the consumer market should raise serious red flags for organic advocates. Why?

THE PROBLEMS

1) The corn that Monsanto will be selling is Bt corn, which means that the seed/crop has an insecticidal toxin inserted into its genetic code and this insecticide gets released when insects ingest it. Read more »

While I promote organic food as much as I can and want to help the industry prosper, I also feel a need to educate and inform my readers.

Without question, organic food is the healthiest food that exists and is something that I believe can feed the planet. However, sometimes the packaging of organic food products is not always the best.

I have talked a lot in the past about my aversion to plastic bottles. Aside from the fact that they are horrible for the environment, they are also hormone (endocrine) disruptors.

When I spoke with David Wolfe, the most famous person in the raw food world, he shared a similar opinion regarding plastic. Read more »

Unhealthy Truth

If you are a parent or you know someone who is parent, The Unhealthy Truth: One Mother’s Shocking Investigation into the Dangers of America’s Food Supply — and What Every Family Can Do to Protect Itself by Robyn O’Brien is a book that should be required reading.

As a Wall Street research analyst and mother of 4, Robyn O’Brien was a very unlikely candidate to become one of the country’s leading food safety advocates. But all of that changed when her youngest daughter had a severe violent reaction to the eggs that she had eaten.

From that day forward, Robyn O’Brien took it upon herself to learn about what was truly going on with our food. Needless to say, what she discovered was very, very unsettling. Read more »

For those who didn’t see the recent announcement, which shouldn’t be a surprise because our government conveniently released it on the Friday before the July 4th weekend, the USDA said that genetically-engineered grass did not have to go through the normal regulatory approval, like most GE-crops do, and could be grown without any oversight whatsoever. Yes, genetically-engineered bluegrass developed by Scotts will be coming soon to a lawn near you.

The first thing that popped into my mind, and I am sure that of many others as well, was “Why in the world do we need genetically-engineered grass? Could someone please explain this to me?” Read more »

The USDA is set to approve drought-resistant genetically-modified corn (MON 87460). Aside from the fact that it is genetically-modified, which I am adamantly against, the USDA is completely ignoring the environmental and socio-economic impacts of this corn.

According to the CFS, the USDA’s proposal:

Very quietly last week, we got some positive news on the genetically-engineered (GE) salmon front.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed an amendment that prohibits the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from using any of its FY2012 funding to approve GE-salmon.

As it stands now, the FDA, instead of the USDA, has the legal power to approve all genetically-engineered animals through its new animal drug law. Yet, industry experts have a real problem with the way that the FDA handles the approval process. Read more »
