Just the other week, I wrote about a California farming community that MUST buy bottled water because the tap water is so polluted from pesticides and other contaminants.

Well, the news about the horrid quality of our drinking water continues.

Trying to figure out why food allergies have exploded over the past 20 years, a team of researchers published a study in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology which said that there is a relationship between the use of a group of pesticides called dichlorophenols and food allergies.

TIME Magazine explained that the study’s participants who had high levels of dichlorophenols in their bodies were 80% more likely to have food sensitivity than those with lower levels, and the authors believe the exposure to the chemicals may be contributing to a hyper-sensitive immune system that recognizes even common food proteins as foreign. All we hear from the chemical industry is that synthetic pesticides are safe to consume, and they will go to any length to make sure that Americans are exposed to as many chemicals as possible.

Here are a few examples.

* A pro-chemical group called The Alliance for Food and Farming attacked the Environmental Working Group‘s Dirty Dozen list, the list of the most pesticide-laden fruits and vegetables, and demanded that the EWG stop publishing it.

* Dow Chemical is currently trying to get the USDA to approve a genetically-engineered corn that is resistant to 2,4-D. In plain English, this means that they want to spray 2,4-D (one of the primary ingredients in Agent Orange) on our crops.

Even though Agent Orange killed 400,000 people and caused birth defects in 500,000 children in the Vietnam War, Dow wants us to believe that 2,4-D is completely safe. Read more »

Stanford's Report on Organic Food Should Serve as a Serious Wake-Up Call

Late Monday night, I read about the Stanford University report on organic food, which said that organic and conventionally-grown food offered similar nutritional benefits, and have spent the last few days processing this news. Here are my key takeaways. INTELLECTUAL HONESTY MUST REIGN SUPREME Based on the parameters that the Stanford professors used, it was obvious that […]

Late Monday night, I read about the Stanford University report on organic food, which said that organic and conventionally-grown food offered similar nutritional benefits, and have spent the last few days processing this news.

Here are my key takeaways.

INTELLECTUAL HONESTY MUST REIGN SUPREME

Based on the parameters that the Stanford professors used, it was obvious that organic was going to be the clear loser before they even got started.

As you may already know, I regularly post an Organic Link Love column where I curate the most interesting and relevant organic food news stories from that week.

However, when I come across something exceptional, I’ll oftentimes dedicate an entire blog post to it.

One such story was in The New York Times the other day and was about about famed money manager Jeremy Grantham and his organic food mission.

In the food world, there is a David vs. Goliath war going on – Big Ag and the chemical industries have invested hundreds of millions of dollars to influence food policy and spread propaganda while organic remains a poorly represented and under-funded movement.

As a result, the U.S. does not label genetically-modified food (GMOs), politicians in Washington D.C. put corporate profits ahead of the healthy food needs of the citizens they represent, and many people are falsely led to believe that GMOs are the only way to feed the world. Read more »

Now for some questions……

What happens when an apple is sliced open and exposed to oxygen? It turns brown.

Does it lose any of its flavor or nutritional value? No. Read more »

One of the reasons that many of us eat organic food is because we want to keep dangerous chemicals out of our bodies.

Yet even if we adhere to a 100% organic diet, we still need to pay very close attention to all of the personal care and household cleaning products that we use – from handsoaps, shampoos, floor cleaners, window sprays, air fresheners, dishwash soaps, etc.

The Environmental Working Group, one of my favorite non-profit groups, who also happens to put out The Dirty Dozen, just released a sneak preview of their Cleaners Hall of Shame – a list of the most hazardous cleaning products on the market.

Many products contain ingredients known to cause asthma or are contaminated with carcinogens. Read more »

I recently got word of a film executive produced by Academy Award nominee actress Mariel Hemingway, and it has a working title of the StopMonsanto Film Project.

Interestingly, this is a scripted movie, instead of a documentary, about five young activists who protest the actions of Monsanto by launching a #StopMonsanto campaign.

The story begins with the main character attending an anti-Monsanto rally in an effort to impress his ex-girlfriend. While at the rally, he learns about Monsanto and soon becomes very involved in protesting against the company. Along the way, he teams up with several like-minded young people and they work together to raise awareness about Monsanto. Read more »
