I understand that I may be on the extreme end of things, in terms of my interest in and passion for organic food. In this regard, I know I kind of live in a bubble.

So, it is great to see that many other people are seeing organic food as a requisite to good health as well.

Funded by the Organic Trade Association and KIWI Magazine, a recent survey of consumers found that 41% of parents are buying more organic food today than one year ago. This figure is up significantly from the 31% who reported organic purchases in 2009 over the prior year.

The survey, which was conducted between August 11th – 27th this year, found that organic food purchases were spurred by three main reasons. Read more »

In wine, there are naturally occurring sulfites and added sulfites. The naturally occurring sulfites are a by-product of the fermentation process and it is nearly impossible to have a sulfite-free wine.

Winemakers have been working with sulfite agents, added sulfites, for hundreds of years. They were originally introduced in Europe as a preservative and are used to prevent spoiling.

It is possible, however, to have a wine that is free of added sulfates and that is organic wine. The four main attributes of USDA certified organic wine are:

– Made from grapes that are certified organic

– No toxic or synthetic chemicals, preservatives or pesticides may be used in the grape-growing process

– No added sulfites in the winemaking process

– The sulfite level (from naturally occurring sulfites) cannot exceed 20 parts per million.

Aside from USDA certified organic wine, which is not too common, there is also wine that has “made from organic grapes” on the label. The two main differences difference between a wine that is “made from organic grapes” and a USDA certified organic wine:

– It can contain added sulfites

– Approved sulfite level is higher — 100 parts per million. Read more »

According to research recently published in the Environment Health Perspectives, pregnant women who are exposed to organophosphate pesticides have a very, very high probability of having kids who suffer from ADHD.

The study tracked Mexican-American women in Salinas Valley, CA who were exposed to high levels of pesticides and then diagnosed their kids when they were between 3 and 5 years old. The results were not good and also not in the least bit surprising.

A few notes on this.

1) Just because you don’t work on a farm doesn’t mean that you won’t get exposed to pesticides. Conventional food is full of them, as Kellogg’s can attest to with its claim that GMO food is safe.

The reason Monsanto and others design GMO seeds/food is so that they can sell farmers the corresponding pesticides.

2) It is very important to give young kids organic food as well. Their bodies are not developed yet and cannot produce the enzyme that detoxifies organophosphate pesticides.

We must continue to fight the politicians, USDA and multinational companies who insist on feeding us chemical-laden food that is harming us. And, the fact that this administration has put into office people like Islam Siddiqui shows that we must continue to push this cause every single day.

One of the best way to do it is to vote with your wallet.

One of the reasons that I am so passionate about organic food is because I don’t believe chemicals or genetically-modified food should be anywhere near our plates. Furthermore, it is intellectually dishonest to say that pesticides or food manipulated by biotechnology can be safe or good for us.

Multi-national food conglomerates, who have serious financial interests at stake, like to spin it the other way.

In a recent letter to consumers, Christina Calleros, the Consumer Affairs Specialist at Kellogg’s, had this to say:

“Biotech ingredients are safe and have become common in the open market. Sixty to seventy percent of packaged foods in the U.S. include biotechnology crops.”

While I agree with her that they have become common in the open market, I just shudder at her claim that they are safe.

They are not safe for humans.

They are not safe for animal and human health.

They are not safe for the workers who are exposed to toxic chemicals.

They are not safe for the environment. I am reading a fantastic book now by Anna Lappe called Diet for a Hot Planet, which goes into this in great detail.

So, the next time you are in the supermarket and see these brands — Kashi, Bear Naked and Morningstar Farms — know that these are made by Kellogg’s and also contain GMO.

If you want to get more involved in this issue, the Organic Consumers Association is waging a campaign against Kellogg’s and is always looking for more support. I’ve sent my email in.

You probably heard that over the weekend President Obama recess-appointed 15 people to different government posts in order to bypass Senate approval hearings.  What may have escaped you is that Islam Siddiqui was appointed as the Chief Agricultural Negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

If you care about organic food and the environment, this move should outrage you.

A lifelong pesticide lobbyist and GMO advocate, Siddiqui’s confirmation in the Senate was opposed by more than 80 environmental, small-farm and consumer groups.

Siddiqui is vice president of science and regulatory affairs at CropLife America, a trade group of biotech and pesticide companies, which is essentially a front organization for Monsanto.  CropLife has the proud distinction of many great accomplishments including fighting the initiatives of banning GMO food in California, claiming that pesticides positively impact endangered species, lobbying the Bush administration for human – and child – testing of pesticides and writing a letter to Michelle Obama urging her to use pesticides in the organic garden at the White House. I just knew that the hundreds and hundreds of hours I have spent roaming the aisles of supermarkets and studying menus at organic restaurants would come in handy one day.

But, I had no idea that it would lead to me writing this post.  So, here it goes….

1) More and More Coconuts

Coconuts have taken on much more prominence as of late.  A bunch of ice creams, including Luna and Larry’s Organic Coconut Bliss and Purely Decadent, have coconuts as their central ingredient.  Energy bars, such as those from Raw Revolution, have used them in their products for a while.

In terms of organic coconuts, this is what I foresee.

Organic coconut water: Coconut water is a hot trend in the beverage world right now.  Some people consider coconut water to be the ultimate post-workout drink because it contains electrolytes.

However, nearly all of those boxes of coconut water that are flying off the shelves in the supermarkets are not organic.  It is only a matter of time before we see a shift to organic. Read more »
