In 1974, music critic Jon Landau proclaimed “I saw Rock and Roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen.” Rarely has such a prophetic statement been made.

Well, last week when I walked into my local organic market here in NYC, Integral Yoga Natural Foods, I had a similar feeling. I took one look at Grower Pete’s Red and Green Leaf Lettuce and said to myself  “this is the future of organic lettuce.”

And, I also said to myself that this is the coolest organic product I’ve ever seen.

What makes Grower Pete’s Lettuce so fantastic is that it is sold in a plastic container with its roots potted in soil. (If I had to guess, the container is probably made out of some eco-material.) Never have I seen this before. Lettuce has always been cut and sold without the soil.

The fact that the lettuce contains the soil, in which it was grown, means that it is still alive. Read more »

In wine, there are naturally occurring sulfites and added sulfites. The naturally occurring sulfites are a by-product of the fermentation process and it is nearly impossible to have a sulfite-free wine.

Winemakers have been working with sulfite agents, added sulfites, for hundreds of years. They were originally introduced in Europe as a preservative and are used to prevent spoiling.

It is possible, however, to have a wine that is free of added sulfates and that is organic wine. The four main attributes of USDA certified organic wine are:

– Made from grapes that are certified organic

– No toxic or synthetic chemicals, preservatives or pesticides may be used in the grape-growing process

– No added sulfites in the winemaking process

– The sulfite level (from naturally occurring sulfites) cannot exceed 20 parts per million.

Aside from USDA certified organic wine, which is not too common, there is also wine that has “made from organic grapes” on the label. The two main differences difference between a wine that is “made from organic grapes” and a USDA certified organic wine:

– It can contain added sulfites

– Approved sulfite level is higher — 100 parts per million. Read more »

Organic Avenue, an organic take-out place that sells pressed juice, juice cleanses and raw vegan food, now has a presence at Fashion Week.

Needless to say, this is a very positive development. For the many people who work during Fashion Week (fashion journalists, buyers, models, etc.), their days consist of running from show to show to show to show with little to no time to eat well.

Organic Avenue has set up a pop-up juice bar in Lincoln Center, the new location of Fashion Week, so that these individuals can get some proper nutrition when they are on the run.

The limited menu includes: watermelon juice, coconut water, green juice (Green Love), cacao smoothies, gazpacho, lemon lime shakes and purified alkaline water.

Organic Avenue at Fashion Week is a phenomenal sight and a continuation of a very promising trend that I am seeing – organic restaurants expanding to non-traditional venues.

Stonyfield Cafe, an organic/natural cafe, set up shop at the US Open tennis tournament this year and organic food trucks are popping up all over the place.

If you are at Fashion Week at Lincoln Center and or are in the Upper West Side in Manhattan, stop by Organic Avenue’s juice bar.

It is located in the lobby at Alice Tully Hall, located on Broadway between 65th and 66th.

Be clear about one thing: The current administration is about as “anti-organic” as you can get and don’t let Michelle Obama’s token organic garden (which wasn’t even organic since the soil was tested as very toxic) fool you.

Recent developments in Washington D.C. are nothing short of infuriating and disheartening for people who love organic food.  Just within the past month, this has happened:

Evidence #1

The FDA declared genetically-engineered salmon to be safe, and approval of this fish appears to be imminent.

This is an absolute disaster. Why? Well, there are many reasons and expect the flood-gates to open to other genetically-engineered animals. Cattle and pigs are sure to be next.

In the U.S., genetically-modified food does not have to be labeled as such. So, when you go to a market and order salmon, you will have no idea if what you are buying has been manipulated in a laboratory or not.

PLEASE send in your email protesting this.

Evidence #2

On August 13, 2010, a federal judge ruled that the USDA could not approve the planting of genetically-engineered sugar beets after this specific date because the agency had failed to deliver an environmental review. The agency needs to prove that GE-sugar beets do not contaminate organic sugar beet farms and don’t cause superweeds.

Proving this will be very, very difficult because we know that GMO crops do cause superweeds and do contaminate similar organic crops. Read more »

I just love reading announcements like this. Researchers at Washington State University just released the results of their study of strawberries and concluded that organic is superior to conventional in several different categories.

Not that this is any great surprise to me but having empirical evidence is always beneficial.

The study, which was published in PLoS One, came to the following conclusions about organic strawberries:

– Longer shelf life and greater dry matter.

– Higher antioxidant activity and concentrations of ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds.

– Sweeter taste, better flavor and appearance. Read more »

Just when you thought it would be an uneventful time to go away on a holiday weekend, the FDA conveniently declared on Friday (when most people are not paying attention to the news) that genetically-modified salmon is safe and doesn’t pose an environmental risk.

The timing in all of this was calculated to perfection and displays a real agenda within the government.  After all, with the naming of Islam Siddiqui to a key trade post and other high level nominations, should we be in the least bit surprised at this announcement?  I’m not.

The skinny: A company in Boston named AquaBounty Technologies has genetically altered a salmon so that it grows to its market size in 16 to 18 months instead of three years. They have been working with the FDA for nearly a decade to get approval and now a decision appears very close.

How do they get it to grow so fast? In the cold weather, salmon normally turn off their growth hormone. So, AquaBounty has inserted a growth hormone from a Chinook salmon as well as a genetic on-switch from the ocean pout, a distant relative of the salmon. As a result, the salmon never stops growing.

The company says that the chances of mixing with wild fish and contaminating real fish is close to nothing because it will only be grown inland on fish farms.  Read more »

According to research recently published in the Environment Health Perspectives, pregnant women who are exposed to organophosphate pesticides have a very, very high probability of having kids who suffer from ADHD.

The study tracked Mexican-American women in Salinas Valley, CA who were exposed to high levels of pesticides and then diagnosed their kids when they were between 3 and 5 years old. The results were not good and also not in the least bit surprising.

A few notes on this.

1) Just because you don’t work on a farm doesn’t mean that you won’t get exposed to pesticides. Conventional food is full of them, as Kellogg’s can attest to with its claim that GMO food is safe.

The reason Monsanto and others design GMO seeds/food is so that they can sell farmers the corresponding pesticides.

2) It is very important to give young kids organic food as well. Their bodies are not developed yet and cannot produce the enzyme that detoxifies organophosphate pesticides.

We must continue to fight the politicians, USDA and multinational companies who insist on feeding us chemical-laden food that is harming us. And, the fact that this administration has put into office people like Islam Siddiqui shows that we must continue to push this cause every single day.

One of the best way to do it is to vote with your wallet.
