Does it make sense that we have to sue our government to get them to obey the law? No, of course not.

But that is what we have to do these days. The USDA is so controlled by Big Ag, biotech and pro-GMO companies that it will completely ignore the law in order to placate its very powerful constituency.

Here’s what happened: In August, Federal District Judge Steven S. White (pictured) ruled that the USDA could not approve the planting of GE-sugar beets until an environmental review had been completed. Seeking to circumvent this ruling, the USDA’s Department of Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service gave the green light for GE-sugar beet seedlings to be planted just one month later, in September. FDA GMO Organic Regulation

Tonight, the Food Safety Bill is supposed to be voted on in Congress, and I just came across this op-ed piece by influential organic food advocates Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser.

Overall, I like what they have to say. The important Tester amendment appears to be in there and much to no one’s surprise, Big Ag thinks that small farmers should not get any exemption. As we all know, Big Ag and their factory farms are the true cause of all of our food problems — not the little guys.

The main issue I have with this legislation (and this op-ed piece) is that it gives the FDA a tremendous amount of power over food manufacturers. In theory, this makes a lot of sense. Having a government body oversee and monitor our food supply is very reasonable.

However, the FDA is so beholden to Big Ag and biotech that I don’t trust they will use their authority in the correct way. I see them cracking down on the little guys while the major food conglomerates remain unscathed. Even if small farmers are exempt from a lot of red tape, the FDA still will have power to harass them. And, that is what makes me nervous.

The FDA needs to prove that it can play fair and make rational decisions when it comes to organic food. Its first test will be to reject the ridiculous GE-salmon debacle that has been proposed. Yet, the FDA is acting in a very shady manner and everything I read makes me think that they are going to approve Franken-Fish.

Let’s hope they do the right thing and not allow GE-salmon. Only then will I have more faith that they will act appropriately in keeping our food supply safe.

Last Sunday night, I watched a profile of J. Craig Venter on CBS’ 60 Minutes after my beloved New England Patriots took down Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. It went from bliss to horror very, very quickly.

For those who don’t know, Venter is credited for decoding the human genome and is a huge name in the biotech world for his accomplishments. His latest project should have people very, very concerned.

This summer in his laboratory he created synthetic bacteria designed on a computer using man-made DNA. In short, he create new forms of life in his lab!!!

Aside from this having potentially horrible, horrible consequences, he made reference to this being the future of food because there were too many people to feed and no way to do it. Read more »

Sorry for the very late notice but I just got word of this.

A movie called Harmony will be on NBC tonight at 10PM PST. This a movie that profiles Prince Charles of England, who has been a leading environmentalist and organic food advocate for several decades. Needless to say, he was well ahead of his time.

Harmony chronicles his lifetime quest to lead environmental change in the world, features a segment on ForestEthics’ groundbreaking protection of the Great Bear Rainforest in Canada and exposes people to his tremendous dedication to and knowledge of organic agriculture.

Anthony Zolezzi, an Associate Producer of the film, told me that “Prince Charles was pioneering organic agriculture and growing methods over 30 years ago, and he created Duchy Originals, a huge line of organic products. The movie shows how authentic and true his commitment to the environment and organics is. I would definitely consider Prince Charles to be one of the world’s experts on organic agriculture and he can speak about the subject in a very, very detailed manner”

Zolezzi said that “the point of this is that he doesn’t have to do all of this work. He is doing it for one reason – because he truly cares.”

As I have written about many times before, organic food is not only healthier for people but it is healthier for the planet. GMOs and the chemicals used on these biotech crops pollute the water, kill the soil and accelerate global warming in numerous different ways.

The movie looks fantastic and will shed a very interesting light on Prince Charles, a man that few of us really know.

For those of you who do not know, the FDA is very close to approving genetically-engineered salmon. If they do, this would be an absolute disaster. Watch the video above to see why.

What is even more appalling is what The Center for Food Safety (CFS) recently discovered that FDA knowingly withheld a Federal Biological Opinion by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) prohibiting the use of transgenic salmon in open-water net pens pursuant to the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA).

According to Andrew Kimbrell, Executive Director of the Center for Food Safety, “This adds further evidence that in fact GE salmon pose a serious threat to marine environments and is another compelling reason for the FDA not to approve the fish for commercial use. While the FDA applauded the company’s choice of land-based containment as responsible, it never revealed that it is illegal in the U.S. to grow genetically engineered salmon in open-water net pens.” Read more »

The are two big trade shows in the organic food world in the U.S.  One is Natural Products Expo West and one is Natural Products Expo East.  Expo East took place a few weeks ago and Expo West took place in March.

When I go to each show, I am looking for the best and newest organic products on the market.

However, I also come across a select number of fantastic products at these shows that are not organic food ones. And of these, most are not even food.

I thought that people would be curious as to some other cool products that I discovered at Expo East and here they are:

IT’S MORINGA

Moringa is supposedly this beyond-super superfood from Africa and is derived from the moringa oleifera tree, which the company says is the most nutrient-rich vegetable tree in the world.  It has:

– 25-30% protein (9x the protein of yogurt)

– 10x the Vitamin A of carrots

– 17x the calcium of milk

– 15x the potassium of bananas

– 25x the iron of spinach

– 4x the chlorophyll of wheatgrass Read more »

In this interview with Ethne Clarke, Editor-in-Chief of Organic Gardening magazine, we talk about the real basics of gardening.

Ethne Clarke knows this subject inside and out. Not only does she run the most prestigious magazine in the organic gardening world but she is the author of 15 books on landscape history and gardening.

The two specific subjects that we cover are: 1) how to test your soil and 2) what are the best vegetables to start with if you are an absolute beginning, like myself.

One fascinating thing I learned from Ethne Clarke was how sea vegetables can be used in gardening.

Also, make sure you check out the Organic Gardening website if you want some great ideas/tips — they break it down by month and geography.
