I know that this reaction is coming very late but for the last two weeks, I had been working around the clock planning our GMO-labeling fundraiser in NYC and did not have time to watch the video.

With people constantly asking for my opinion on the Whole Foods/GMO controversy and with the event finally over, I saw the Organic Spies video in its entirety last night and here is my reaction.

The fact that Whole Foods sells GMOs is nothing new to me. In the past, I have had very specific conversations with the people in PR at Whole Foods about this issue, and they told me point blank “Yes, we sell products that have GMOs in them.”

As the Organic Spies video showed, however, not all employees realize this and many of them are giving out incorrect information about whether Whole Foods sells GMOs or not.

This is unacceptable. Employees cannot be giving out the wrong information, especially when it comes to GMOs. Read more »

On Monday night in New York City, we had our fundraiser for Proposition 37, California’s GMO-labeling initiative, and it was a phenomenal night.

Approximately 75 people packed GustOrganics and filled the room with THE BEST energy. Individuals came in from South Carolina, North Carolina, Michigan, Connecticut, New Jersey, and upstate New York. Why did they travel so far to attend this event?

Because they know how critical it is that GMO-labeling gets approved in California, and they wanted to show their support and be with other people who care so deeply about this issue. Read more »

The Stanford Report on Organic Food and Undisclosed Ties to Big Ag / GMO Advocates

The Stanford Report on Organic Food and Undisclosed Ties to Big Ag / GMO Advocates

Stanford’s report on organic food, which interpreted data in a very questionable manner and did not adequately take into account the harm that pesticide exposure causes to young children and fetuses, created the perception that people don’t need to buy organic – something that couldn’t be more untrue. As I suspected from the beginning, this whole […]

Stanford’s report on organic food, which interpreted data in a very questionable manner and did not adequately take into account the harm that pesticide exposure causes to young children and fetuses, created the perception that people don’t need to buy organic – something that couldn’t be more untrue.

As I suspected from the beginning, this whole study was a big effort to undermine the credibility of organic with the all-important California ballot initiative to label GMOs, Proposition 37, right around the corner.

And despite the fact that the authors claimed that no outside funding was received to complete this study, in an attempt to create an aura of impartiality, there do appear to be serious conflicts of interest which had not been fully disclosed. Read more »

Here are my key takeaways.

INTELLECTUAL HONESTY MUST REIGN SUPREME

Based on the parameters that the Stanford professors used, it was obvious that organic was going to be the clear loser before they even got started.

As you may already know, I regularly post an Organic Link Love column where I curate the most interesting and relevant organic food news stories from that week.

However, when I come across something exceptional, I’ll oftentimes dedicate an entire blog post to it.

One such story was in The New York Times the other day and was about about famed money manager Jeremy Grantham and his organic food mission.

In the food world, there is a David vs. Goliath war going on – Big Ag and the chemical industries have invested hundreds of millions of dollars to influence food policy and spread propaganda while organic remains a poorly represented and under-funded movement.

As a result, the U.S. does not label genetically-modified food (GMOs), politicians in Washington D.C. put corporate profits ahead of the healthy food needs of the citizens they represent, and many people are falsely led to believe that GMOs are the only way to feed the world. Read more »

For those people who don’t know, there is an incredibly important ballot initiative taking place in California later this fall called Proposition 37.

As I wrote about the other day, Proposition 37 would require the mandatory labeling of genetically-modified food products (GMOs) in California, and the citizens of that state will be voting on it in just a few months.

The opposition – Big Ag, chemical companies, major food corporations and even some parent companies of organic brands – has been donating millions and millions of dollars to defeat this measure. Why?

Because these companies don’t want people to know that what they are eating has been genetically-modified. It is better for these businesses that consumers remain in the dark and not ask any questions about what GMOs could mean for their health. Read more »
