When I was at the Expo West trade show recently, I came across Horizon Organic Milk with DHA Omega-3 and was impressed at first glance. I thought to myself that this looks like a pretty interesting dairy product.

Yet several days after returning back to NYC and just as I was about to write a post about this organic milk, I received an email from The Cornucopia Institute, a watchdog for the organic industry.

The Cornucopia Institute has condemned the USDA for allowing products containing unapproved synthetic additives (DHA Omega-3, as one of them) to be labeled “organic” for an indefinite grace period.

Furthermore, The Cornucopia Institute has filed legal complaints against infant formula manufacturers and Dean Foods, manufacturer of Horizon dairy products, for adding unapproved additives: Martek Biosciences Corporation’s omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (DHA/ARA), derived chemically from fermented algae and fungus, to foods with the organic label. School lunch is a major topic of discussion these days. Whether it is Michelle Obama fighting against childhood obesity, Jamie Oliver on TV with his Food Revolution show or the anonymous educator on Twitter (@fedupwithlunch) who takes pictures of school food, people have come to understand that this issue can no longer be ignored.

If I had children and sent them to NYC public schools, I shudder to think what they would be served at lunch.

Well, the New York Times recently did an article on this very subject and revealed quite a bit. Read more »

Coconut water is one of the most popular and fastest growing drinks on the market for one main reason — it tastes so good.

Furthermore, it is touted as the best post-workout drink due to its large number of electrolytes. There always seems to be someone who is drinking it immediately after my yoga classes.

Yet, nearly every box of coconut water that you see people drinking from is not organic.

My Dilemma

Even though many organic food restaurants use young Thai coconuts, these coconuts are not organic. They are shipped in formaldehyde from Thailand in order prevent mold from growing on the outside of the fruit.

Furthermore, I have heard that they plant sugar into the ground where the coconut palm trees are grown in order to get a much sweeter taste. Read more »

Even though I do not have any children or a pregnant wife (or a wife, for that matter), I give a tremendous amount of thought as to how I would feed my kids.

It doesn’t happen very often but I had one of those moments the other day. Yes, one of those moments when I come across an organic product that really blows me away.

The last time I felt this way was when I discovered Grower Pete’s Lettuce.

This time it was the pressed organic pomegranate juice at Organic Avenue, a well-known raw food and juice take-out place here in NYC.

Most organic pomegranate juice that can be purchased at a supermarket is either from concentrate or is mixed in with other juices.

The one that I got at Organic Avenue wasn’t pasteurized or made from concentrate or mixed in with any other juice. Furthermore, and most importantly, it was freshly pressed.

As I write about often, I am huge fan of pressed organic juice. Not only is it more nutritious but it just tastes better. Read more »

This morning I read a very well-written and interesting piece in the Los Angeles Times about what is going on in the organic wine world.

For those who are unfamiliar with the details of organic wine, I wrote a blog post about this a while back. Essentially, naturally-occurring sulfites above a certain number are not allowed in USDA certified organic wine. Added sulfites are not allowed at all.

The Los Angeles Times discussed a movement going on that would allow sulfites to be added. Some organic wine producers want to be able to add sulfites because they think it would encourage more wine producers to grow more grapes organically, without the use of herbicides or pesticides. They also say that sulfites are important, given that wine is regularly shipped around the world and these sulfites are critical to help prevent the wine from going bad. Read more »

Whether it is all the trade shows that I go to, all the people that I am connected with on social networks, or all of the emails that I receive, I come across tons and tons of different teas.

So, the first question I always ask is “what makes this tea different than all of the other ones?”

Runa guayusa organic tea is something truly unique. Dervied from the Amazon in Ecuador, guayusa does not contain tannins. This results in a taste that is very, very smooth and one that is not astringent. Furthermore, the company claims that it has twice the amount of antioxidants than green tea.

There is a tremendous social element to Runa as well. The company is having a major impact on the lives of the local farm workers in Ecuador and the demand for this product is raising their incomes significantly. Read more »
