Last week, I went to the Natural Products Expo East Trade Show in Boston. I just absolutely love these shows. Not only do I get to meet some fantastic people but I have the opportunity to see the newest products on the market.

These are the best organic food products that I came across.

SIPP – GINGER BLOSSOM SODA

I can only describe Sipp’s ginger blossom soda in one word – WOW.

When I first took a sip, I experienced the ginger. Then literally within one second, the ginger vanished and vanilla poured in. It was like Houdini played a trick on me.

The aftertaste was where things calmed down and I could reflect on what was in my mouth. If I could compare it to anything, I’d say this drink tastes like a cream soda. The few ingredients include ginger, lime, vanilla and agave nectar.

I am not a huge organic soda drinker but this beverage was simply outstanding. It was very, very hard to put down. Read more »

At the 2010 Natural Products Expo East Trade Show, I came across a fantastic new baking product called Purely Elizabeth.

In this video, I speak with Elizabeth Stein, the founder of Purely Elizabeth and a fellow NYC resident.

There were two things that I loved about this product:

1) The Ingredients – Aside from being wheat-free and gluten-free, Purely Elizabeth uses great organic ingredients such as chia seeds and palm sugar.

2) The Packaging – The design and branding are spectacular.

Keep an eye on Purely Elizabeth. This is a young company that is going to garner a lot of attention in the organic space.

Today was the second day of the Natural Products Expo East trade show in Boston. I saw some fantastic new products that I will soon be writing about in my best of show awards.

Aside from seeing really cool products, the one thing I love about going to the trade shows is meeting people.

These are people who are as passionate about organic as I am. These are people who eat the same way I do. Furthermore, these are people who tend to be really, really nice individuals.

In covering and writing about this industry, it is always a big thrill for me to meet some of the business icons in the natural and organic world.

It happened very recently when I interviewed Stonyfield President and CE-Yo Gary Hirshberg at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in NYC.

And, it also happened today when I met Tom Chappell, the founder of Tom’s of Maine toothpaste and a new wool clothing company called Rambler’s Way.

In the late 1980s after I went to my public high school outside of Boston, I did a post-graduate year at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. For those unfamiliar with a post-graduate year, it is similar to a 13th grade. Many, many prep schools offer it, largely to improve their football teams. Physically, I never looked like a post-graduate, as I was told many times, but that’s a story for another time. Read more »

In 1974, music critic Jon Landau proclaimed “I saw Rock and Roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen.” Rarely has such a prophetic statement been made.

Well, last week when I walked into my local organic market here in NYC, Integral Yoga Natural Foods, I had a similar feeling. I took one look at Grower Pete’s Red and Green Leaf Lettuce and said to myself  “this is the future of organic lettuce.”

And, I also said to myself that this is the coolest organic product I’ve ever seen.

What makes Grower Pete’s Lettuce so fantastic is that it is sold in a plastic container with its roots potted in soil. (If I had to guess, the container is probably made out of some eco-material.) Never have I seen this before. Lettuce has always been cut and sold without the soil.

The fact that the lettuce contains the soil, in which it was grown, means that it is still alive. Read more »

When I recently interviewed Gary Hirshberg, President and CE-Yo of Stonyfield, at the US Open tennis tournament, one of the questions that I asked him off-camera was the following: Who was the genius that came up with the idea of doing the YoBaby packaging in both English AND Spanish?

Prior to meeting with Gary and during my product research at the supermarket, the bilingual labels immediately jumped out at me.

In full-disclosure, anything Hispanic seems to have that effect on me. I speak Spanish, have spent a lot of time in South America, my favorite musician, Gustavo Cerati, is from Argentina, and the list goes on and on and on.

Despite my fascination or passion (some friends of mine would say “obsession”) for this subject, I am very aware that the U.S. Hispanic market is the fastest growing segment in our country and accounts for approximately 16% of the population.

Gary is also well-versed in these statistics and said that its other yogurts would be switching to bilingual labels as well. An exact time frame for when this will happen has not been determined, however.

While there may be other organic brands out there that list their ingredients in these two languages, I have yet to come across them. Read more »

One of the organic food trends that I predicted for this year was the continued growth of coconut water.

There is a product on the market by a company called Exotic Superfoods (great name, isn’t it?) that sells certified organic young Thai coconut water.

Why is this so novel?

Well, the white young Thai coconuts that you see in the market are not organic. They are shipped from Thailand in formaldehyde in order to prevent mold from growing on the outside. Yes, formaldehyde. The same stuff they use on a corpse.

Exotic Superfoods gets around this whole mold issue by bottling the water in Thailand and shipping them frozen to the US. When you buy them here, you usually buy them frozen and have to let them defrost before drinking.

Nevertheless, non-organic coconuts are widely used in the raw food world, which generally prides itself on organic food.  Read more »

Organic Avenue, an organic take-out place that sells pressed juice, juice cleanses and raw vegan food, now has a presence at Fashion Week.

Needless to say, this is a very positive development. For the many people who work during Fashion Week (fashion journalists, buyers, models, etc.), their days consist of running from show to show to show to show with little to no time to eat well.

Organic Avenue has set up a pop-up juice bar in Lincoln Center, the new location of Fashion Week, so that these individuals can get some proper nutrition when they are on the run.

The limited menu includes: watermelon juice, coconut water, green juice (Green Love), cacao smoothies, gazpacho, lemon lime shakes and purified alkaline water.

Organic Avenue at Fashion Week is a phenomenal sight and a continuation of a very promising trend that I am seeing – organic restaurants expanding to non-traditional venues.

Stonyfield Cafe, an organic/natural cafe, set up shop at the US Open tennis tournament this year and organic food trucks are popping up all over the place.

If you are at Fashion Week at Lincoln Center and or are in the Upper West Side in Manhattan, stop by Organic Avenue’s juice bar.

It is located in the lobby at Alice Tully Hall, located on Broadway between 65th and 66th.
