Recap of NY State's GE-Labeling Hearings, Interview with Andrew Kimbrell from The Center for Food Safety

Last week was a first for me. Last week was a first for me.

Even though I have attended a countless number of meetings, seminars and conference calls for the labeling of genetically-engineered (GE) food, and have been involved with many marches, rallies, and fundraisers across the country, I had yet to attend an official GE-labeling political hearing — until the one held a few days ago in New York City.

And let me tell you, it was an eye-opener.

Ever since the narrow loss of last year’s Proposition 37, California’s GE-labeling ballot initiative, the momentum in the U.S. for the labeling of GE-food has never been stronger.

GE-labeling legislation is in various stages in 25 different states. Connecticut and Maine have passed GE-labeling bills, albeit with major provisional clauses, and the state of Washington will be voting on its own bill later this year. Read more »

For a few years now, I have been hearing about Sweetgreen, the organic, farm-to-table restaurant chain that is based in Washington, D.C.

Started by three friends from Georgetown University, the chain now boasts 20 locations in DC, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and now Massachusetts.  Next week, I’ll be at the opening of its first New York City restaurant, located in the Nomad Hotel in Manhattan.

Aside from its commitment to sustainable food (I was told that about 70-80% is organic), Sweetgreen sells pressed organic juice in many of its locations and also puts on a yearly music festival called Sweetlife. Needless to say, these guys are doing some really cool things. Read more »

BBERRI BLUEBERRY-MAQUI BERRY JUICE

Maqui berry powder is starting to gain significant traction in the marketplace because of its very high level of antioxidants.

Seeking to capitalize on the growing interest of this powerful berry from South America, a Chilean company called Bberri has introduced an organic blueberry-maqui berry juice, a product that I have never seen before. Read more »

In a world where we are in a daily struggle against the proliferation of GMOs and toxic pesticides, one essential aspect of our ecological system gets widely ignored – the quality of our soil.

As I often say, the quality of our food is largely dependent upon the quality of the soil. Without healthy soil, our plants cannot provide us with the vital minerals and nutrients that we need. And that holds true for organic food as well. (A farm needs only to be free of chemicals for three years in order to be certified organic.) Read more »

UPDATED AS OF 11/14/14: Rockin’ Raw is now open everyday except Tuesday.

If you ask a majority of the people who are plugged into the organic scene in NYC what their favorite restaurants are, there is a decent chance that Rockin’ Raw won’t get mentioned.

Why?

Maybe because it is tucked away on a pretty quiet street in Greenwich Village.

Maybe because it is a pretty small restaurant and doesn’t seat that many, so the absolute number of people going there and talking about it is not that great.

Maybe it is has fallen off people’s radar screens – it used to be in Brooklyn, closed for a while, and then re-opened in Manhattan several months later.

But whatever the reason, it is a real shame because this Peruvian-Creole raw vegan restaurant is a true gem.

Aside from having fantastic raw food, Rockin’ Raw has an amazingly calm atmosphere. Especially when I go there during the day on the weekend, I truly don’t feel like leaving. It is one of those places that you just want to hang out for hours.

Here is some of the organic food that I have eaten recently at Rockin’ Raw. Read more »

Last year, I met with Jonathan Grayer, the new controlling shareholder of Organic Avenue, and one of the things that we discussed was the quality of food at his company. Much to my surprise, he was incredibly forthcoming and acknowledged that several of Organic Avenue’s items were not up to par.

He told me that his goal was to offer raw and cooked vegan food that would appeal to a mainstream audience and that also tasted really, really good.

Aside from already having revamped the salads, which are now excellent, Organic Avenue recently launched its first line of quinoa bowls, and I have been beyond impressed.

The three red quinoa bowls are the following:

SWEET YAM & CELERY

Very hearty and filling. The sweetness of the yams ties everything together really well. When I am hungry, this is what I go for. Read more »

Next week is the biggest organic trade show of the year – Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, CA – and I came to California early to visit a friend and to check out the newest organic restaurants in San Francicso. (Stay tuned to my blog over the next few days, as I have some great ones that I am going to be sharing with you!)

For food on my flight, one product that I brought with me was Muesli Fusion’s Athlete Fuel.

I first discovered Muesli Fusion’s Athlete Fuel at Natural Products Expo East 2012 in Baltimore several months ago when I stopped by the company’s booth.

Right away, I was impressed with the product because it was hearty and filling. The product satisfied my hunger cravings, left me feeling very satiated, and was packed with plenty of Omega-3s from the nuts and seeds. Read more »
