As I wrote about the other day, it was during college when I went on antidepressants. Each day was getting harder than the next. The sky was growing darker and darker. It was a major struggle just to survive.

I was overwhelmed with a variety of responsibilities — school work, in which I seemed to be drowning; the tennis team, which occupied several hours of my time per day, not including constant traveling to other schools for matches and tournaments; and my fraternity, something in which I was very actively involved.

With my voice becoming more heavy during each phone conversation, my parents suggested that I go visit a local psychiatrist to see if he could help. More specifically, they thought that antidepressants were the answer. After a brief chat with the doctor, he diagnosed me with a mild case of depression and believed that Prozac would indeed improve my situation.

At first, I was very reluctant to go on Prozac. I thought it was only for people who were really “screwed up.” My parents reassured me that this was not the case. They presented two counter-arguments. Read more »

As I wrote about the other day, it is a real challenge when it comes to eating organic food with my non-organic food friends. They are just not that into it, and I respect that completely.  I believe every person should do whatever they want.

Yet, I am noticing some interesting things from some of these same people. Now that they have very young kids, most of them are babies, the diet in the household has switched completely. The kids are fed 100% organic and there doesn’t seem to be any wavering whatsoever.

This decision is not a result of me badgering them about the importance of organic for young children. Although I may make general comments from time to time, I try to not get involved unless I am asked my opinion.

Maybe the fact that I am super-fanatical about organic or that I write an organic food blog has rubbed off on them in some small way. I don’t know for sure, however.

Nevertheless, it makes me very happy to see that these little kids are eating organic. Organic milk, particular, is absolutely essential for kids and that’s what they are getting.

One Notable Observation/Question

Have the parents switched to eating organic now that their kids are eating organic? For the most part, it doesn’t seem so. And this isn’t a financial issue — money is not the problem. Read more »

As someone who is incredibly committed to organic food, one issue that I always face is going to eat with friends of mine who do not eat organic. And for the most part, none of my lifelong friends here in NYC eats organic.

Whenever we make plans and the subject of having dinner together arises, it always creates some tension inside of me. What am I going to eat? Why won’t they go to an organic place with me? And, why am I getting upset about this in the first place?

To say that none of them will not eat organic is not entirely true. I can think of a small number of friends who have gone with me recently to organic restaurants but this is certainly not a regular thing for them. Nor would they want it to be. They enjoy their non-organic restaurants far too much and what kind of food they eat (organic vs. non-organic) is not a real concern of theirs. Their primary criteria is that the food tastes good.

My college roommate asked me a few weeks ago, “So, Max, what do you do when you go to Italian restaurants?”

I replied to him “I don’t go to Italian restaurants.”

He was completely bewildered and shocked. To not go to Italian restaurants in New York City is almost unheard of. Yet, I don’t go. It is not the food I like. Read more »

In the summer of 2001 and at the urging of my then-girlfriend, I went for an appointment to go see her naturopathic doctor in New York City, the place where we were both living at the time.

Having done acupuncture since high school, I had always been open to alternative medicine and was curious what this woman could do for me.

During our session, she asked me about all of my health and dietary habits – eating, drinking, smoking, drugs, exercise. Everything. In the midst of this conversation, the topic of organic food somehow arose. I remember that I had some notion about what organic food was but wasn’t overly familiar with it. Read more »
