One of the questions that I have been getting a lot lately is: how do we know if the food we are eating or buying is organic?

The answer is pretty simple. The USDA has a list of approved profit and not-for-profit certifiers that inspect farms and manufacturing facilities. When these certifiers declare that a product is truly organic, based on existing rules and regulations, the food manufacturer may then use the USDA certified organic seal.

While this is no fool-proof system, it is the best we have. Organizations such as the Organic Consumers Association are constantly on the lookout for companies that are trying to circumvent the rules. So, if maintaining the integrity of organic is important to you, please support them.

In this video, I also discuss what you want to look out for when buying organic fruits and vegetables in a store.

NYC Raw Food Video Restaurant Reviews

Here is my very first video restaurant review.  On this trip, I crossed the bridge (actually I took the subway, which goes underneath the water) over to Brooklyn to check out Rockin’ Raw.

As the name explains, Rockin’ Raw is a raw food restaurant with a very distinct twist to it. The cuisine is a combination of New Orleans/Peruvian/Creole all wrapped into one.

A lot of times you go to raw food restaurants and you see many of the same dishes.  Not here. There were items on the menu that I had never seen before and probably won’t again.

Key highlights:

– Unique, interesting dishes.  Many items were brand new to me and I’ve eaten at my fair share of raw food restaurants all over the country.

– Very spicy. If you like hot, this is your place.

– Excellent service. The waiter even played cameraman for me in the opening shot on the street. Read more »

The recent salmonella scare, which spurred the recall of over 550 million eggs, has had an unsurprising effect: more people are purchasing local and organic eggs.

If you’ve seen the movie Food, Inc., you know the inhumane conditions in which chickens are raised in our industrial food system. So, how can we be in the least bit shocked that salmonella has emerged?

I’m not. And, with events like this, I am hoping that people are going to be making a more permanent shift to local and organic.

I don’t care what anyone, including our government, says. While by no means 100% fool-proof, organic farming and livestock methods are vastly superior and safer.

A few of the organic rules on chickens:

– They must be managed organically from the 2nd day of life.

– Organic feed and pasture only. Read more »

If you follow the organic world and technology closely, you know that Google has long promoted organic food as part of its corporate culture. You could get unlimited amounts of free and prepared organic food on its Mountain View, CA campus without ever having to leave.

According to Charlie Ayers, Google’s 53rd employee and the chef who led this charge, he said that Larry Page and Sergei Brin (the company’s two co-founders) “wanted power foods that would leave their minions stimulated and energetic after lunch, not slumped over their keyboards,” and “they wanted it done with the highest quality organic, sustainable-sourced ingredients.”

Absolute music to my ears. Hard-core business people who know the value of organic food.

(A side note: Charlie Ayers, left Google in 2005 and has a book out appropriately titled Food 2.0: Secrets from the Chef Who Fed Google.)

So, needless to say when I got the invite from my new friend, Jessica, to come over to Google’s NYC offices, I was thrilled to be able to see this first-hand. My desire to shoot video and document everything was unsurprisingly nixed by the PR people there. Secrecy is paramount at Google.

Here are the highlights of my visit: Read more »

According to research recently published in the Environment Health Perspectives, pregnant women who are exposed to organophosphate pesticides have a very, very high probability of having kids who suffer from ADHD.

The study tracked Mexican-American women in Salinas Valley, CA who were exposed to high levels of pesticides and then diagnosed their kids when they were between 3 and 5 years old. The results were not good and also not in the least bit surprising.

A few notes on this.

1) Just because you don’t work on a farm doesn’t mean that you won’t get exposed to pesticides. Conventional food is full of them, as Kellogg’s can attest to with its claim that GMO food is safe.

The reason Monsanto and others design GMO seeds/food is so that they can sell farmers the corresponding pesticides.

2) It is very important to give young kids organic food as well. Their bodies are not developed yet and cannot produce the enzyme that detoxifies organophosphate pesticides.

We must continue to fight the politicians, USDA and multinational companies who insist on feeding us chemical-laden food that is harming us. And, the fact that this administration has put into office people like Islam Siddiqui shows that we must continue to push this cause every single day.

One of the best way to do it is to vote with your wallet.

One of the reasons that I am so passionate about organic food is because I don’t believe chemicals or genetically-modified food should be anywhere near our plates. Furthermore, it is intellectually dishonest to say that pesticides or food manipulated by biotechnology can be safe or good for us.

Multi-national food conglomerates, who have serious financial interests at stake, like to spin it the other way.

In a recent letter to consumers, Christina Calleros, the Consumer Affairs Specialist at Kellogg’s, had this to say:

“Biotech ingredients are safe and have become common in the open market. Sixty to seventy percent of packaged foods in the U.S. include biotechnology crops.”

While I agree with her that they have become common in the open market, I just shudder at her claim that they are safe.

They are not safe for humans.

They are not safe for animal and human health.

They are not safe for the workers who are exposed to toxic chemicals.

They are not safe for the environment. I am reading a fantastic book now by Anna Lappe called Diet for a Hot Planet, which goes into this in great detail.

So, the next time you are in the supermarket and see these brands — Kashi, Bear Naked and Morningstar Farms — know that these are made by Kellogg’s and also contain GMO.

If you want to get more involved in this issue, the Organic Consumers Association is waging a campaign against Kellogg’s and is always looking for more support. I’ve sent my email in.

In this video product review, I highlight Raw Revolution – Cashew & Agave Nectar.

I’ve been eating Raw Revolution bars for a few years and continue to do so. They are simply one of the best bars on the market.

There are several reasons why I keep buying them.

– The taste and quality of Raw Revolution bars are excellent. You can tell that they are made with excellent ingredients.

– Raw Revolution bars are very filling. I always feel satiated after eating one, and it can definitely hold me over until the next meal.

– Lastly, Raw Revolution bars are raw. This means no ingredient was heated above 118 degrees – vitamins, minerals and nutrients remain intact.

If you’re looking for a great tasting and filling bar, try Raw Revolution Cashew & Agave Nectar. It is one of my favorites and can be purchased HERE.
