Last week, I was in New York City to attend two fantastic trade shows — 2024 Summer Fancy Food Show and Good Food Mercantile.
Whenever I go to these shows, I always come across some outstanding organic products, and this year was no exception.

For as long as I have been covering the organic food industry, I have attended Natural Products Expo East, with my first show in Boston in 2009.
So, it is very bittersweet to report that after last week’s show in Philadelphia, there will be no more Expo East moving forward. New Hope, the organizer of the event, has decided to launch something new in 2024 called Newtopia Now.

By now, many of you may be familiar with the “ANDI Scores” when you walk into the produce section of Whole Foods Market.
Created by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, ANDI stands for “Aggregate Nutrient Density Index” and ranks a food’s nutrient density on a scale from 1 to 1000.
The ANDI scores are calculated by evaluating an extensive range of micronutrients, including vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and antioxidant capacities, and by dividing the nutrient level of a food by its caloric content (N/C).
For context, kale, a dark leafy green, scores 1000 while soda scores 1.

Before heading down to Costa Rica, I had no idea that it would be one of the best trips that I would ever take and that it would impact me so greatly.
Now back in New York City, I have been trying to wrap my arms around why I loved it so much. Three main things come to mind:
1) First and foremost, it was a phenomenal group of people on the trip. Despite the fact that almost none of us had ever met before, we all got along really, really well. No drama, very easy, and everyone was extremely likeable.

If you ever go to a talk by Dr. Brian Clement, founder of the Hippocrates Health Institute and the person in this video discussing the merits of Green Juice vs. Green Smoothies, you can be guaranteed to hear this: eat and juice sprouts.

I get asked all of the time by people “how do I know that the food that I am eating is organic?”
Well, when we buy food in the supermarket, there is an organic certification process managed by the USDA. Those organic food products have the organic seal.
Yet, what do we do when we go to restaurants?
While there are very few restaurants that have actually been certified organic (there used to be one in NYC called Gustorganics), most of them are not.
In this video, I share with you the one question that I always ask when I go to a new organic restaurant. The answer gives me a good idea about how serious they are about organic.

A girl I used to know in New York City was so fanatical about recycling that she would literally take empty bottles home from bars because she feared that they would be tossed in the garbage.
I’ll never forget the time when we were out one night and she started filling up her designer handbag with empty beer bottles, which weren’t even hers! She was that committed to the environment.
Yet, when she drank her coffee each morning, organic coffee was never even a consideration.
Although I didn’t realize it at the time, this didn’t make much sense. Why?
Because conventionally-grown coffee is incredibly unhealthy for people and the planet.

Each year when the Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases its “Dirty Dozen” – the 12 most pesticide-laden fruits and vegetables that people should avoid – the major pesticide companies and their front groups launch a major PR campaign demanding that EWG stop publishing these annual lists, insisting that chemicals are not harmful.
The organic industry and health advocates completely scoff at these ridiculous claims. Furthermore, the State of California has declared that glyphosate, the most widely used chemical in the world and one that is routinely sprayed on our food supply, causes cancer.
And now we have a new report out of Harvard which reinforces the notion that pesticides can cause real harm, particularly for women.

What GMO apologists will constantly tell you is that genetically-modified food is essential to feed the world.
They’ve spent so much money on lobbying and influencing politicians – $572 million from 1999 to 2010 – that a majority of people in Washington D.C. have actually come to believe this nonsense. (University of Michigan’s Catherine Badgley explains here why organic can feed the world.)
But GMOs, we are told, won’t just feed the world. They’ll supposedly nourish it as well.
One prime example of this is GMO ‘Golden Rice’, which was touted as a way to help solve a major global health problem by providing kids adequate amounts of Vitamin A.
