My Recent Brunch at Sun in Bloom

In what is quickly becoming my favorite place to have brunch in New York City, Sun in Bloom in Brooklyn is where I ventured out to this past weekend.

Sun in Bloom is an organic restaurant on the edge of Park Slope. This hidden gem (well, I would say hidden to people who live in Manhattan — not sure if it is hidden to Brooklynites) serves some fantastic vegan food, both cooked and raw.

It was very, very cold in New York City this past Saturday, so I started off with the Miso Broth.

It is pretty unusual to see miso broth. Normally, you see miso soup with onions, carrots and small cubes of tofu.

This miso broth was made from miso paste with a base of chickpeas, Bragg’s amino acids, ginger, kombu (the sea vegetable) and garlic.

What I loved about it was that it was light and not over-salted. Miso soups tend to be doused in salt and this one wasn’t at all. The miso broth at Sun in Bloom was outstanding.

Next I had the Bella Devine Salad.

This may be one of the best salads in all of New York City.  You’ve heard me rave about the salads at One Lucky Duck before but this one is definitely on par with anything I’ve had.

The Bella Devine consisted of kale, dulse, sauerkraut, pumpkin seeds, avocado and a live sesame ginger dressing. The taste was refreshing, the kale had great depth to it and the dressing was very flavorful but not overpowering. What made the whole salad was just the right amount of sauerkraut.

Next I moved onto the Gluten-Free Apple Pancakes with Carmelized Maple Apples.

I LOVE pancakes but rarely eat them because I don’t like eating white flour. These were light and fluffy, and melted in my mouth.

The pancakes were made with a gluten-free, non-white flour base (garbanzo, rice and sorghum), maple apples, maple syrup and a nutmeg cinnamon mix on top.

I finished off the meal with Gluten-Free Banana Bread.

The banana bread was rich and filling, and made from a gluten-free flour mix, bananas and a dash of organic brown sugar.

The service at Sun in Bloom is excellent, the space has fantastic energy, and the restaurant also has great desserts, gluten-free muffins and cookies, and pressed organic juices. Furthermore, it has nut milk smoothies made with alkaline water, something you almost never see in a restaurant. Very impressive.

This is the third time I’ve been to Sun in Bloom and I always leave there very, very happy. Definitely go check this place out.
