My Saturday in Brooklyn at Smorgasburg – What a Great Day!!!

Brooklyn Flea, which hosts some of the most popular flea markets in the city, recently expanded its offerings. The latest offshoot is called Smorgasburg, billed as a food market that “brings together New York State Greenmarket farmers and top New York City purveyors and chefs on the spectacular Williamsburg waterfront every Saturday.”

Many of these vendors were local food artisans but what interested me, of course, were the organic booths. Needless to say, the skyline of Manhattan and the gorgeous weather made for a spectacular afternoon at Smorgasburg.

These were the organic food vendors that I saw.

SALUD

Salud, which means health in Spanish, is a Latin-infused organic juice and food bar located in Midwood, Brooklyn.

Chipotle roasted fava beans were something that I had never seen before but apparently are very common in Mexico. They were crunchy and had the perfect amount of spice. They were rock-star awesome.

Also, Salud has a fantastic website. It has great music (it takes a little while to load, when it does load), pictures of legendary figures, such as Frida Kahlo, and really cool Mexican iconography.

FLOUR CITY PASTA

Flour City Pasta, an organic pasta maker from Syracuse, NY, had emmer at its booth. Emmer is another word for farro, which is one of my Top 5 Organic Food Trends for 2011.

The other product that caught my attention was an organic pasta that contained the ingredients sweet potato, lime and cinnamon. Very intriguing and innovative.

FINE AND RAW

Fine and Raw makes organic raw chocolate and a very limited amount of ice cream. The chocolate is well-known in NYC and has an incredibly smooth taste.

Daniel Sklaar, founder of Fine and Raw, made a special batch of chocolate ice cream for Smorgasburg that was as rich and decadent as anything I’ve had in a while.  The picture does not do it justice – my apologies.

CITY ‘LASSES

From a company called City ‘Lasses, Switzel is a tea made from organic blackstrap molasses, a sweetener that is loaded with iron, potassium and calcium. The drink had a rich and beautiful flavor. Very impressed with this one.

BARRY’S TEMPEH

Barry’s Tempeh is an organic tempeh producer from Brooklyn. Its tempeh had great texture and was very fresh.

BLUE MARBLE ICE CREAM

Blue Marble makes organic ice cream but by the time I got to the cart (because of the big lines), the ice cream had practically melted and the pictures wouldn’t have looked so great. Nevertheless, it had a deliciously rich and creamy taste.

If you are ever looking for an adventure on a Saturday afternoon in New York City, take the quick subway ride out to Brooklyn and go check out Smorgasburg. You’ll eat some fantastic food and enjoy some amazing scenery.
