Normally, I cringe when I hear the words “artisinal” or “specialty” to describe a food.
I just feel that they are overused terms that have been exploited for marketing purposes, similar to how all of the industrial food companies slap “natural” on so many of their products. And as we know, “natural” doesn’t mean anything.
Yet, when I tried out the cinnamon red maca almond butter by Jem, the first thought that came to my mind was “Wow, is this different. I guess this is what an artisinal or specialty product is supposed to taste like.”
How was it different?
In several ways.
One, it tasted like it was homemade and someone literally made it in their kitchen next door. Even with most organic butters that I very much enjoy, you just don’t get that same feeling.
Two, the flavor profile was unique and distinct.
Three, the texture was very light. Even the nut butters that advertise themselves as creamy are never as creamy as Jem’s. When I opened up the cap, it started to drip out of the bottle.
Aside from the fact that it is a raw nut butter, which means it hasn’t been heated above 118 degrees, the other reason why I like this product so much is because of the specific ingredients that Jem uses.
- I am a huge fan of coconut palm sugar, a sustainable and very popular sweetener that is low on the Glycemic Index.
- The almonds are sprouted, which allows us to absorb the maximum amount of enzymes from the nut.
- Maca is a fantastic superfood and increases stamina, immunity, vitality, and oxygen in the blood. Furthermore, it is mineral-rich with calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, sulfur and iron, and contains trace minerals, such as zinc, copper, selenium, manganese and silica.
- Cinnamon is an excellent spice and is often associated with longevity. In Ayurveda, cinnamon has helped with diabetes, and it has also been shown to have antifungal and antibacterial properties.
It is clear that a lot of thought and intelligence went into designing this almond butter. The exact ingredient list includes: spouted almonds, coconut palm sugar, red maca, cinnamon, vanilla.

This is one of the best organic products I have seen in a long time and would make an excellent gift idea for someone. Jem’s raw chocolate is stellar as well and is something that I will review at a later date.
Cinnamon red maca almond butter by Jem can be ordered online and is sold mostly at retail locations in Oregon. In New York City, One Lucky Duck is selling select Jem products also.

Good morning Max!
Sounds fantastic. I cannot wait to try this.
All the best,
stephanie
Hi Stephanie,
My prediction: you will try it and want it in your store and the entire region ASAP.
Live well,
Max
I agree!
I meant
Great review!. This is the best tasting product I’ve ever ‘lucked’ onto and I will be buying on a regular basis through our local (Central Oregon) avenues. I do, however, have a question that maybe you can answer: since this has raw ingredients – is it safe for children to eat?
ps: if you haven’t tried Jem’s coconut cardamom almond butter … Treat yourself, it’s wonderful!
Hi Gladys,
Thanks so much!
Safe for children: If I had a child who wasn’t allergic to nuts, I would have no problems with feeding this product to him or her. You may want to check with the company, if that gives your more assurance.
Live well,
Max
I really appreciate your response, thanks!
Hi Gladys,
My pleasure. I am in regular contact with the company and am confident that they’ll respond to your question/concern in a timely manner.
If you don’t hear back from them, let me know.
Live well,
Max
Does this have to be refrigerated after opening ????
Hi Cathy,
I don’t refrigerate my nut butter but I don’t think that it would harm it if you did.
Live well,
Max
HI MAX !!!…Thanks for your help !!!…I heard from the JEM company and they assured me that the cinnamon red maca butter does not need to be refrigerated after opening…unless I want to put it in the refrigerator, in which case it will end up being like FUDGE !!! YUCK…Most RAW nut butters that I have purchased in the past needed refrigeration….Anyway, I can’t wait to try this product…LIVE WELL TOO…!!!!!!…Cathy
Hi Cathy,
Let me know what you think of it after you’ve tried it. I’m curious to know.
Live well,
Max
Good Evening Max,
Do you happen to know if this is available in western Washington? I would love to try it and also the coconut cardamom almond butter. They sound delicious!
Hi Rebecca,
Take a look at their store locator http://jemrawchocolate.com/organico/where-to-buy/ and maybe there is a market near you that carries it. My guess is that there is!
